Stephen SecklerHOST

But Shirin began her career as a big law litigator and spent about a decade practicing before making the transition to the business side of professional services.
Stephen SecklerHOST
1:42
Since then, she has held senior roles at the accounting firms BDO and KPMG, served as a COO of a national law firm, and ultimately launched her own consulting business.
Stephen SecklerHOST
1:53
Today, we're going to focus primarily on that transition, how Shireen figured out what she wanted to do, how she persuaded people to give her opportunities when she didn't have the traditional background for those jobs, and what other lawyers who are considering an alternative legal career can learn from her experience.
Stephen SecklerHOST

Shereen, welcome to Council to Council.
Shireen HilalGUEST
3:01
So for me, it felt very much like I was still working with the same team and it wasn't really my decision as much to move as much as, yes, I want to come with you and stay with the team.
Shireen HilalGUEST
3:14
And then after that, I decided, as you said, to move to the business side.
Shireen HilalGUEST
3:20
And my first role was at BDO.
Shireen HilalGUEST
3:23
It was helping them to build the consulting division.

Sarah TraversHOST
0:41
Lorraine,
Lorraine NelsonGUEST
0:41
how are you? Welcome.
Lorraine NelsonGUEST
1:34
Did I
Sarah TraversHOST
1:34
say I was going to do that? Okay, so this is slightly different for us.
Sarah TraversHOST
1:39
First of all, for those who don't know, have been hiding under a rock, tell us about BDO and its position then in Northern Ireland and then where you came in.
Lorraine NelsonGUEST
1:47
Yeah, no problem.
Joan MulvihillGUEST
32:10
Um, so I approached the Western Development Commission, under whom the Connected Hubs are all managed, and, uh, I was introduced to Liam Horan there, who looks after the Connected Hubs, and he immediately got it, and he said, "Great, you want to put art into my co-working spaces?" And I said, "Yes, I do." And then the question was, how are we gonna pay for the art? How are we gonna buy art? So I am delighted to say, and I think this is something you may not be aware of, but we had three corporate sponsors who gave us money to help us buy the art, and one of them in particular I want to give a shout-out to, because I know this is Midlands, is Midland Steel.
Joan MulvihillGUEST
32:46
Midland Steel in Portlaoise, Tony Woods, straight away, I met him at, um, I met him at an industry work event, and I told him about the project, and he said, "Tell me what you need." And, uh, so he has been sponsoring us on this project for over three years, so has, uh, BDO International, my former employer from years ago, and the .ie domain registry, WeAre.ie.
Joan MulvihillGUEST
33:07
So, um, they all have committed to supporting this project for the last four, three, four years and given us the funding, so we were able to buy art from almost 100 artists over the last three or four years, buying paintings from them.
Joan MulvihillGUEST
33:23
That supports so many artists.

The thing that often surprises people is that cryptocurrency or crypto assets are treated as property in New Zealand, and they're not treated as currency for tax purposes.
Poppy CrawfordSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER

So what that means is in New Zealand, we don't have a comprehensive capital gains tax.

Steven LynchGUEST
2:19
So we might send you to BDO Sydney on secondment.
Steven LynchGUEST

And if you look at where the company is now, what's kind of the client base? Like what type of clients on the accounting side are really the best ones or are you going for small, big, everything?
Tobias JanieschGUEST
4:04
So from the accounting firm side that are using the software, it's basically everyone, like all of the small firms, but bigger firms, even KPMG, BDO, like the big players with 20,000 clients and so on are using Pennylane.
Tobias JanieschGUEST
4:17
But then on the SME side, it's for small, medium enterprises.
Tobias JanieschGUEST
4:20
So anyone from zero to a thousand employees.
Tobias JanieschGUEST
6:26
So I think you start very small, right? You work with very digital forward-looking firms, with smaller firms that are growing with you.
Tobias JanieschGUEST
6:33
That's, I think, easier in the beginning.
Tobias JanieschGUEST
6:35
Like you can't sell to BDO right from the start, right? There are so many complexity missing features so that you do first, hey, let's get the first 20 happy accounting firms, make them really, really happy.
Tobias JanieschGUEST
6:46
And then you can move on to the next step and go to the next 50 and see, okay, there are 10 more edge cases that make them really happy with the best customer service.

Well, we had two
Brian CouchHOST
11:36
questions, two questions, but one pertaining to this that was sent to me while the meeting was going on, and you actually ended up bringing it up, but the question was, If the utility fund is this messed up, what's going on in the general fund, and are we considering an audit there? That was texted to me during this part of the meeting.
Brian CouchHOST
11:55
And during this part of the meeting, you actually asked that question to BDO.
Chad WickerHOST
11:58
Yes, I did.
