Why couldn't you get the company to make the shift while you still had that level of influence?

Yeah, that was a very difficult time for me because they, fundamentally, I'd spent a year and a half and bought some companies, one called Live Profile, which you can still, I think they're still on the net, and Newbay, and that allowed us to work cross-platform, but also it had a whole storage capability for media into the cloud.

And you didn't have that.

And then like BlackBerry came out and it was like, do you have BBM? Have you got BlackBerry Messenger? Fuck

off.

Oh, God.

And the final nail, a massive surge of BBM messages from Argentina people celebrating a soccer goal overwhelmed that last server.

Unbelievable.

Soccer fans took down BlackBerry.

For days, 70 million users had dead devices.

People were freaking out.

Comments like, people across Dubai will start committing suicide soon if BBM doesn't come back on.

The dependency was huge by then.

was never cool enough for BBM.

I always, I went straight from the like slide out phone to my

iPhone.

And then I had learned about BlackBerry Messenger, how it was a thing.

Like, you didn't realize how much of a thing it was until like a little bit almost after the era ended.

But BBMs were... like the if you

were on bbm

I mean, you're still using, you know, when WhatsApp came out and it was really rubbish compared to the BlackBerry Messenger, right? For the longest periods of time.

BBM was just like the top.

iMessage was the first thing that beat, I would say, BBM.

I don't think it did ever.

I think iMessage is since today.

For me, it's just like, no.

Another really popular one, there's a website called Mental Health Matters.

Now, they have a chat function, so you can go on there and you can just type in, like, MSS Messenger and BlackBerry Messenger.

It's a bit like that, like a team.

no yeah um and there's always someone there to answer and it's not a robot so you can just literally have a chat an instant message with someone how you feeling and it's done like people are using that a lot more because it's anonymous um and and and that's what people are looking for they want that anonymity i can hardly struggle to say um
