But getting help from those conditions is not easy when you're also dealing with a lack of housing, money, and food.

Doctors at Baylor University Medical Center have joined other physicians around the country by bringing medical treatment directly to the forests and the underpasses where their patients live.

One of the team's leaders, Dr. John Garrett, says this is the first program of its kind in Dallas.

He joined us to reflect on the street medicine team's progress so far.

Can you talk to me about how this program has changed the way that you interface with homeless patients who are seeking medical care?

So in the ED, so I'm an emergency medicine physician.

And so we see a good amount of unsheltered and sheltered homeless folks in the emergency department at Baylor University Medical Center.

About 10% of our patients, so it's 30 or 40 patients a day are homeless.

And you know what? When I was in seminary, One of my jobs, I needed jobs desperately because I was trying to pay my way through school.

I got a job as the chaplain at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, Texas, just a little ways from the seminary.

To say that I had no clue what I was doing would be an understatement.

This was learning on the job, I'm telling you.

It's almost like when it comes to school.

I know what's best for my kid locally than some bureaucrat in Washington, D.C. Quite frankly, I think I know my body better than some doctor who's seeing 400 patients at Baylor Hospital.

No offense to your profession, Doc, but I'm really upset with all of this.

Well, you know, I try to spend time with patients and try to understand what's their priorities.

Now, Dallas breast cancer specialist, Dr. Joyce O'Shaughnessy, is studying whether they could also help reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence.

So O'Shaughnessy is a nationally recognized breast medical oncologist and researcher with Baylor University Medical Center and Texas Oncology, and she's leading groundbreaking research that could change the cancer landscape for women everywhere.

She joined us recently to share more.
