Bayezid I

The first major drawback for the Ottomans was not caused by Europeans but by Tamerlane, the ruler of the Timurid Empire.

At the Battle of Ankara in 1402, the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid was captured and later died in captivity.

Central authority was lost and the empire descended into civil war.

After a decade of internal conflict, Mehmed emerged as the victorious new Sultan and the Ottoman state could focus again on external issues following this interregnum.

Bayezid I, surnamed Yıldırım, or the Lightning, from his impetuosity, after a long uninterrupted career of victory, during which he had held all Europe at bay, in a single battle in fourteen oh two succumbed to the irresistible power of Timur the Great, losing everything but life.

Amongst those who fell in the almost unprecedented carnage of this terrible field was, it is supposed, Mustafa, the Turkish Sultan's eldest son and heir.

In fourteen oh three Bayezid died, or according to another authority, brained himself against the iron bars of the cage in which his conqueror is stated to have retained him.

The remaining sons of the deceased monarch contrived to elude the vigilance of Tamerlane and at once commenced fighting amongst themselves.

For eleven years they kept the tottering empire in a chronic state of intestine warfare.

In 1422, after a short but successful reign, Muhammad I died and was succeeded by his son, Murad II, who had just attained his eighteenth year.

Picture the field outside Ankara, late in the afternoon of the 28th of July, 1402.

The Sultan is still on his horse.

He's been on it since morning, and the day has gone from bad to catastrophic in the space of about an hour.

And what he's watching right now, from a rise in the ground where his household troops have pulled him back for a moment to breathe, is his own army riding away from him not fleeing riding away and joining the other side whole regiments of horsemen men he conquered less than 10 years ago men whose fathers were bays in their own right until he took their lands wheeling their horses out of his line and cantering almost casually across the field to fall in behind the banners of the army trying to kill him He knows some of their names.

These are men whose lands he annexed, whose fathers he dispossessed, riding at a pace that isn't panic, because for them, this isn't a rout.

It's a homecoming.

By nightfall, this man, the sultan, Yildirim, the thunderbolt, ruler of more Ottoman territory than his father or his grandfather had ever governed, will be a prisoner.

He will never rule again.

What actually assembled on that field was a coalition.

Serbian lords, Bosnian lords, men with their own followings and their own reasons for showing up, brought together under a Serbian prince named Lazar.

This wasn't a national army in any sense a modern listener would recognize.

It was an alliance, the kind that forms when enough regional lords look at what's happening on their southern border and decide that, whatever their disagreements with each other, this particular threat is bigger than all of them.

Others think he simply didn't have reliable information yet.

And that ended that blockade.

On November 14th, the 2nd Battalion of the Armenian Volunteers engaged in battle for the first time near Bayezid with the Turkish soldiers and the Kurds.

In the course of a bloody combat, which lasted 24 hours, Droh, the brave commander of the battalion, was seriously wounded, and Dr. Pajder Magian was forced immediately to take his place until Droh recovered and returned to resume the command.

In the summer of 1950, Dr. Pajder Magian, again as representative of the executive committee of Tiflis, went to Van.

Every time that the Russian army was forced to retreat from the recaptured parts of Turkish Armenia, no precautionary measures were taken in order to save the local Armenian inhabitants from the inevitable massacres.

For example, in December 1914, when the Turks advanced as far as Sarakamish and the Ardahan and forced the Central Russian Army to retreat from the neighborhood of Alashkirt in Bayezid, the commander of the local forces, General Abbot Zeef, an Assateen Moslem who had joined the Greek Church, strictly ordered the local Armenian inhabitants, nearly 32,000 in number, not to stir from their places.

and in order to have his command accurately carried out, he placed mounted Cossack patrols in the plains of Alashkirt, lest the Armenian peasants should emigrate toward the Russian frontier, in which direction the Russian army, with its transports, had already been moving since December 13.
