Battle of Potidaea

"If I needed a pair of sandals, wouldn't it be absurd to accept a whole ox-hide to make them from?" He needed very little, and whatever he didn't need, he didn't take, no matter who was offering.

Alcibiades also describes what Socrates was like at war when the two of them served together in the army at the Siege of Potidaea, that he bore hunger and cold better than anyone.

That in the depths of winter when everyone wrapped themselves in furs and wouldn't stir from their tents, he walked barefoot on the ice in his usual cloak.

That one day he stood still, lost in thought from dawn onwards, and that as evening fell, some of the soldiers carried their bedding out into the open to see whether he'd stay like that all night, and he did.
