Battle of Chickamauga

Benning's and Anderson's brigades of Georgians attached to the old Whiting Division and Hood assigned to the command of the division thus organized.

After the Battle of Chickamauga, in which Hood lost a leg, he was promoted to a Lieutenant Generalcy and placed in command of the corps in the army of General Joseph E. Johnston.

General C.W. Field being, in February 1864, promoted to a Major Generalcy and given command of Hood's old division.

About the same time, General Robertson was relieved of duty with the Texas Brigade and ordered to Texas.

Though he followed Lee into Virginia, it was at a respectful distance, and the march of Longstreet's corps south was leisurely.

The Texas Brigade rested from the march for a week or more at Raccoon Ford on the Rapidan, and thence proceeding toward Fredericksburg arrived in the vicinity of that city about the 25th of July, remaining in camp there until about the last of August, when it moved down to Port Royal, some twenty miles below on the Rappahannock.

Thence, with McLaws' division and under command of Longstreet, it went to the aid of Bragg's army, joining that army in time to participate in the two days' battle at Chickamauga.

The Civil War produced its share of ghost stories, but few battlefields have earned a reputation as chilling, or as persistently haunted, as Chickamauga, the dense, tangled wilderness in northern Georgia where Union and Confederate armies clashed in September of 1863.

The battle was brutal, chaotic, and soaked in blood.

Deprived of possessing the female, the male worked off his possessive complex by collecting all manner of bubolos and bric-a-brac.

The average den contained a paperweight from Lookout Mountain, a jagged shell from Chickamauga, a piece of wood from The Main, pictures of baseball players with beards, pictures of bicycle champions, a yellowing full-page photograph of Admiral Schley, a letter opener from Niagara Falls, a lithograph of Bob Fitzsimmons, a musket badge from the G.A.R.

Parade, a red tumbler from the State Fair, a photograph of Julia Marlowe, a Monk's Head matchholder, a Malay Chris, five pipe racks, a shark's tooth, a starfish, a snapshot of the owner's father's bowling team, colored pictures of a natural bridge and balanced rock, a leather table runner with an Indian chief on it, and the spangled jacket of a masquerade costume, softly shedding its sequins.

Today we're going to talk about one of the most overlooked battles, major battles of the Civil War, Battle of Chickamauga, which took place from September 19th to the 20th, 1863.

Now while other battles were loom larger in national consciousness than Chickamauga, such as, of course, Gettysburg, the Siege of Vicksburg, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Shiloh.

These are all very famous battles in the Civil War.

He's received the divisions of Longstreet, another division under Bushrod Johnson, yes, that's a real name, and additional smaller units from all around the Confederacy.

He feels that he has enough men to face Rosecrans.

Rosecrans has about 60,000 men under his command at the Battle of Chickamauga, while the reinforcements that Bragg received has swelled his army up to 65,000 men.

This is one of the few times in the war at a major battle that the Confederates outnumber the Union army.

For the next six months little was done, the Union army occupying Murfreesboro and the Rebel army a position near Tullahoma.

then followed the campaign which terminated in the Battle of Chickamauga.

John C. Pemberton from Pennsylvania became a Confederate general and was ultimately the general who surrendered Vicksburg to Grant in eighteen sixty-three.

George Thomas was Virginia-born, old slaveholding family, but he never resigned his commission, and he became known as the Rock of Chickamauga, the Union general who won the Battle of Chickamauga, was a Virginian.
