He then was drafted, well, not drafted, he volunteered in World War I and was sent to the front line on his 19th birthday into the Battle of the Somme, one of the worst battles of human history.

His Batman, who was like his Sergeant Lewis, was an officer, was blown up right in front of him.

And then Lewis was wounded and carried shrapnel in his body the rest of his life.
