The boy, William said, was the son of a woman he knew back in North Carolina named Julia Anderson, and she had let Bruce travel with William.

This connection between William and Julia began in November of 1911, when William began living near his father's home in Barnesville, North Carolina.

Julia was a neighbor of his and during this time, William and Bruce had formed an unlikely yet close relationship.

Bruce began to follow William around wherever he went in the area and by all accounts, the two became nearly inseparable.
