Baptism with the Holy Spirit

Turn with me to the book of Acts.

Are y'all ready? I want to talk to you about the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

I want to talk to you about the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

You're like, I got that.

I'm like, you ain't got nothing.

I'm grateful for tongues, but friends, if we relegated baptism of the Spirit to some dribblings at an altar call five years ago, then you have sorely missed the full purpose of the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

The baptism of the Holy Spirit, it's tongues, but it's a lot more than tongues.

It's power.

And when we have the permanent indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we're sealed with a baptism until the day of redemption.

Baptism of the Holy Spirit until the day of redemption.

We are to rejoice evermore, as Paul said.

So, When we trust the Lord, very little can affect us.

And I've all been made to drink into one spirit.

Therefore, filling of the spirit is baptism of the spirit.

Baptism of the spirit.

There are some beloved Christians, and I'll call them beloved, I love them.

There are some beloved Christians, who do not understand what is really the baptism of the Spirit.

Baptism of the Spirit is the birth of the church.

Baptism of the Spirit is the birth of the church.

My beloved, I'll ask you this question.

Tonight I want to talk to you about

receiving from God by way of prayer and the baptism of the Holy Spirit because uniquely so these things come together in a parable that Jesus told in Luke chapter 11.

Talks about prayer and it's the one of two parables in Luke 11 that deal primarily with prayer.

And so what I wanna do is we're gonna just move quickly through it then we're gonna pray and believe God's going to work in response to that.

I'm just saying there is a determined... type of just saying, I'm going to go after what I need from God, and no one is gonna stop me, I need it, he's got the answer, and I'm gonna go, and I'm gonna go, and I'm gonna go, and I don't care what people think, I'm going to go until I get it.

Here's what's interesting.

It's not only talking about prayer, but it's also talking about the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

And we know this because in verse 13, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him? And the reason why this is important, so there's two groups of people I'm talking to tonight specifically is, on the one hand, there are people, and you've gotten tired of praying, and you feel like, you know what, I've already prayed, God's already heard it, and I'm done.

How was that to be received? It doesn't say here.

As we'll see in a moment, in Acts chapter 2, the apostles spoke with other tongues following the reception of the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

And I've got to add my phone number to Jay's and to Larry Yarber's because I also believe that the baptism of the Holy Spirit came upon Cornelius and his household as well.

And also as we turn to Acts chapter 19, the case of the Ephesian disciples, the gift of tongues was exercised following the imparting of the Holy Spirit by the laying on of the Apostle Paul's hands.

We've got to turn to other passages to find out the manner in which the gift of tongues was to be received.

And there appeared unto them tongues parting asunder like as a fire.

And it set upon each one of them and they began to speak in tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The apostles received the baptism of the Holy Spirit just like Jesus had promised them.

If you are born again...

BUT IF YOU'VE NEVER RECEIVED THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, YOU HAVE TO HAVE THAT.

JESUS TOLD HIS DISCIPLES EVEN AFTER HE WAS RAISED FROM THE DEAD AND RIGHT BEFORE HE WENT BACK TO HEAVEN, HE SAID, TERRY IN JERUSALEM UNTIL YOU RECEIVE POWER FROM ON HIGH, THE HOLY SPIRIT.

And man, they became changed people.

They ran and hid before the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

But after that, they stood boldly and told the Pharisees, you judge yourselves whether we should obey God or whether we should obey man.

They were different people.

And sure enough, power came upon them.

Today is another installment in our study of God's Holy Spirit.

We'll all establish what it means to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

We'll hear how this concept has been misunderstood and abused in the past, and we'll find out the critical role that it plays in our lives as believers.

Today's lesson is titled, The Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

This morning we want to take you to the book of Acts, but what I want to do is I want to give you a biblical background and doctrinal study concerning the baptism with the Holy Spirit.

But as he goes down to the Jordan River there.
