At the heart of the story was the love between a mother elephant and her son, and the profound heartbreak of a child being separated from his mother.
LawrenceHOST
4:33
The theme of parental separation and even death will be present not only in Dumbo, but also in Pinocchio and most poignantly in Bambi, where the little deer loses his mother to a hunter in one of the most heartbreaking sequences in animation history.
LawrenceHOST
4:50
What inspired Walt to explore such powerful emotions? In part, it was his own sense of alienation from his parents growing up, yes, but it also seems to be Walt's processing of another tragedy in his life, something he perceived as a personal failure.
LawrenceHOST
5:08
See, following the success of Snow White, Walt and his brother Roy finally had enough money to provide for their aging parents.
Rachel WagnerHOST

Rachel WagnerHOST
21:06
No question.
Molly RasberryGUEST
21:06
Not that one, no, but, but the original, and if Charlotte's death just tortured you like Bambi's mom dying as well.
Rachel WagnerHOST
21:14
Yeah.

Inspired by Walt Disney's lifelong admiration for the great outdoors, the resort's design will pay tribute to decades of animated stories rooted in nature, with subtle nods to classic films from the lush forests of Bambi and the colorful winds of Pocahontas to the sweeping glacial landscapes of Brother Bear.

MikeHOST

Bambi and Bambi 2.
MikeHOST

No, I don't know what they call it.
MikeHOST
4:03
Bambi 2.
MikeHOST
4:03
What they call Bambi 2, but anyway.
MikeHOST
4:06
Maybe
JeanHOST
4:06
they call it Rambi.
DennisHOST
2:40
This is kind of from the package film era, which is in the 40s.
DennisHOST
2:49
So basically, the first five animated features that Walt Disney made was usually called the Golden Age, which is Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, and Bambi, all classics of American cinema.
BonnieHOST
3:05
Mm-hmm.
DennisHOST
3:07
Very time-consuming and expensive to make, and on their original release, only Snow White and Dumbo turned a profit.
DennisHOST
3:16
Really? Yeah.
DennisHOST
3:18
Wow.
BonnieHOST
3:19
Bambi didn't turn a profit?

So here it's like there's some people.
MattHOST
11:18
I mean, you know, it's like, hey, there's Bambi.
MattHOST
11:20
And then they like double shout Bambi with the deer in the headlights joke later.
MattHOST
11:23
You know, that's some obvious stuff.
ThomasGUEST
11:25
and the rabbit looks like thumper yeah and there's like a robin hood reference in there because the the bear that shows up's name is little john so like there's so many we're gonna break ground i guess through the course of this

53 MINS LATER

ThomasGUEST
64:30
do you have any other things that they changed
MattHOST
64:34
um just like little i already i already closed that window but it was like little plot points that like weren't interesting nothing that would have fundamentally changed the movie i mean having the star be like a peter pan figure that would have fundamentally fundamentally changed the movie the queen being evil would have done that so but the other things are just little changes
ThomasGUEST
64:54
Okay, well i've got a list of the things that I noticed that I think were nods to other disney movies, right? so um The one of the first ones I try and do these in order but they're kind of scattered at least grouped by disney movie So first snow white when we first see magnifico, he says mirror mirrors on the wall I mean a lot of these are going to be so obvious they beat you over the head But you might have also missed a lot of these um, and then I mentioned that all of asha's seven friends are based on the seven dwarfs so you can kind of like match each of their personalities up there's also a poison apple skull image on magnifico's desk which represents him being the you know the evil witch essentially in this version of the movie Then you've got Bambi and Robin Hood.

speaker_3NARRATOR

The advice about not saying anything at all if you cannot say something nice is often attributed to Thumper, though the actual movie dialogue is slightly different.
