With the harbour frozen and plains grounded by weather, the only option was a relay of dogsled teams, 20 mushers and more than 150 dogs, relaying the serum across the frozen wilderness in a race against time.

The final leg was run by a musher named Gunnar Carson and his lead dog, Balto, who navigated through a blinding blizzard, in total darkness, in temperatures of minus 40 degrees, to deliver the serum to Gnome.
