Balthasar Hubmaier

So I ran to my library.

What's the story here? What stories could I tell? Well, the story of Waldshut is really the story of a very small part, a small sliver of the Reformation, but a very important person, a man named Balthasar Hubmeier.

Have you heard of him? Probably not.

unless you're well-versed in the Anabaptist tradition.

We'll call it something.

In the meantime, sit back and enjoy the show.

So let me give you a few bits of information that might help solidify my argument that Balthasar Hubmeier is the most interesting, one of the most interesting, most overlooked characters of his age.

Hubmeier was the first Anabaptist to have a PhD in theology.

Grebel, Montz, and Rubin were there and were given eight days to leave the canton.

So four days later, January 21st is considered now the beginning of man of baptism.

We don't have him recorded either in the Vatarian Chronicles or an actual that he's in that baptism record.

But it's possible.

We're not quite to Hubmeier yet, but we're about to be, just the next step.

So this is now this.

Now, this is important that in the beginning, there's this, where do we put the peasant revolt guys that happen to be baptizing adults? Are they with the Michael Sattler and the different ones there? When I was reading or I was studying the Dutch history, I'll never forget this, one of the books that I read in one of the 18th, an early 19th century source talking about what do you do with Hoffman and Minnow and they're so close together.

And he had a great analogy.

S- Castellio thought, yes, he is a heretic, but he's saying the execution of heretics is not consistent with the teaching of Christ.

And in my video on whether Protestantism caused secularization, I discuss this a little bit and I give other examples of early Christians advocating for religious toleration, like Balthasar Hubmaier and his 1524 treatise, Concerning Heretics and Those Who Burn Them.

This is a particular emphasis of Anabaptist and Baptist traditions and free church traditions, and I think it's an area we can be grateful for their contribution.

For those of us who do agree with that theology today, I dare say most of us simply take it for granted.
