Baffin Bay

And then a friend of mine, Jimmy May, and I went down the shoreline.

We went down to the point, what we call Point of Rocks on Baffin Bay there on the King Ranch side.

There was this monster buck standing on the bank, and it was foggy.

We eased up there, and I was fixing to shoot him.

And then there was a group out of Houston that fished the Texas coast.

And they started on the Louisiana border and fished all the way to Mexico.

Well, I had a cabin down in Baffin Bay, and my son and I took them.

I met them down there, and I talked to them.

You've stood in waist-deep water in Baffin Bay at daylight and had this argument.

Maybe with a buddy, maybe with yourself.

Chartreuse or plum? Chicken on a chain or morning glory? You dig through the bag, tie on a different tail, and something eats it.

That's a fish tuned to its home water.

Now, as you know, Texas is not one water.

Sabine Lake in August is not Baffin Bay in February.

West Galveston with a south wind is not the same as the upper Laguna.

We have bays where you can read the bottom in four feet and bays where you can't see your own boot tops.

It was something you had to pay for.

So that was a big adjustment, but I started hunting waterfowl out in Baffin Bay, right outside of Kingsville, and I hunted, like, 32 outings when I first moved to...

I loved it.

Yeah.

And if it's a high tide, you don't see them, you're going to ruin your boat very quickly.

Yeah, I've had friends tell me stories about Baffin Bay as well, and I just won't venture out that way without a guide for sure, right?

Right, and I've heard that as well with Baffin because that would be, you would think, a fun place to go if you just want to take the boat out.

But most people are like, you do not go in Baffin if you don't know those waters.

And they were like that.

Well, guess what? One of them, his name was Mike Fane, down there at Baffin Bay.

He got brain cancer.

Didn't know the man.
