This delightful old kitchen, with its mysterious memories, was a place of great fascination to Florence Nightingale and her sister in their childhood, and many stories did they weave about the scenes which transpired long ago in the old mansion so near their own home.

It was a source of peculiar interest to have the scenes of a real Queen Mary romance close at hand and gave zest to the subject when the sisters read about the Babington plot in their history books.

Dethick Church, where our heroine attended her first public service and continued to frequently worship so long as she lived in Derbyshire, formed a part of the Babington's domain.

This was partly thanks to the queen's secretary and spymaster, Sir Francis Walsingham, who exposed multiple conspiracies at home and abroad.

One of the most famous intrigues was the Babington Plot, a plan to assassinate Queen Elizabeth and replace her with Mary, Queen of Scots.

The reluctant Elizabeth eventually signed her cousin's death warrant after Walsingham found definitive proof of her direct involvement.

Mary's execution in 1587 then set the wheels in motion for a Spanish invasion.

However, in 1586, another plot was uncovered to assassinate Elizabeth.

This was called the Babington Plot, and this time, Francis Walsingham, England's spy guru, set a trap for Mary.

Letters smuggled out of Mary's captivity would be intercepted by Walsingham's agents.

The letters would reveal Mary's complicity in the plot and her sanctioning the killing of Elizabeth.
