Babesia

And to make a long story short, we ended up returning to tick-borne disease through another family member who finally got her diagnosis.

And then at that point, I figured out that he not only had Lyme disease, but he also had two common co-infections, specifically Babesia and Bartonella.

But at that point, it was 15 months after his first appointment, he had received even early on a diagnosis of late stage Alzheimer's.

So his PET scan actually showed that he was in the late stages of cognitive decline upon initial diagnosis.

And that's what we're working to build.

And we're looking to really change the standard of care for these pretty devastating diseases.

We're really focused initially on the three Bs, Borrelia, Bartonella, and Babesia, because those are the hardest.

Those are the ones that are in the lowest quantities that actively hide and are difficult to detect with direct detection.

So I... wrote that article, A History of Chasing Bugs, because after many years of doing it, I started, everybody, they'd come up with something else.

They'd say, well, now we need to also target Babesia microti.

And then it was like, okay, now we need to target this.

Now we need to target that.

You can look at parasites.

Certain parasites literally get within the brain, especially the red blood cells of the brain, such as malaria or a Lyme co-infection called Babesia, and they get into your red blood cells in the brain.

They take all the glutamine out of your blood, the amino acid.

They consume it, they tear it apart, and one of the byproducts they produce is ammonia.

Mm-hmm.

And of those who may have infections like a Lyme disease, about a quarter to maybe 30% have all three Bs, Borrelia, you know, Babesia and Bartonella.

It's sort of like the posse that travels together, and that's [laughs] and that's what I see.

So, um, it's always very surprising when parents come to me and we dig and they ask, "Well, why are you testing for this?" or, "Why, why are we doing this? We came in for this problem."

Okay.

And like you said, the Borrelia, Bartonella, Babesia is at the root of many of these.

Um, what questions do you ask to get to that? What kind of responses are you getting from patients, and how do you kind of go deeper to look at these as possible causative agents?

It's been associated with neurocognitive decline.

Babesia, the parasite I see all the time is associated with it.

And finally, even fungal infections, they find fungus in the brains of people with Alzheimer's, not just in the gut.

And it's interesting, most people know about Candida syndrome, right? If you're in the functional medicine space.

But

if you hand them this questionnaire, you can just look at the questionnaire and go, question one and 22, fevers, day sweats, night sweats, chills, flushing, Air hunger, I can't catch my breath in a cough.

Those are symptoms of a parasite called Babesia, which show up in 60 to 80% of my Lyme patients.

So it's like having malaria on top of Lyme.

And I think it's because our immune systems are so dysfunctional because of everything else that it sort of sets us up for things like long COVID, things like chronic Lyme disease, Bartonella, Babesia, all these different things, Epstein-Barr, because I think the immune system is just shutting down.

And so the key is, number one, you've got to really identify the triggers of You've got to identify the big triggers first, the things that are making you sick.

If you're living in a moldy place or your work is moldy, you have to figure that out because you won't get better.

We've done a lot of stuff.

She's had the mold remediation.

You know, we're treating her for Lyme and Bartonella and Babesia.

We're doing all the stuff.
