Axum

After Christianity arrived, several kingdoms like Makuria flourished along the banks.

In Ethiopia, the kingdom of Aksum was a major power from the 1st century to the 10th century.

While they used the Red Sea for trade, the Blue Nile and Atbara rivers were also part of their territory.

The basin is also home to Nilotic peoples, such as the Dinka and Nuwer, who moved from South Sudan into Uganda and Kenya.

But despite Abu's best efforts, the nascent Muslim community faced further violence.

And, in 615, Muhammad arranged for some of his followers to seek shelter in the kingdom of Aksum and found a small colony from where they could conduct trade under the protection of the Christian king, al-Nagashi.

However, things worsened four years later, in 619, when Abu Talib died and with him went the protection he had offered to Muhammad.

Now, at the whim of the Quraysh, the Prophet and his followers suffered violent prejudice and persecution.

Chinese envoys had been sailing through the Indian Ocean to India since perhaps the 2nd century BCE.

Yet it was during the Tang Dynasty that a strong Chinese maritime presence could be found in the Persian Gulf and Red Sea into Persia, Mesopotamia, Arabia, Egypt, Axum, Ethiopia, and Somalia in the Horn of Africa.

The Silk Road represents an early phenomenon of political and cultural integration due to inter-regional trade.

In its heyday, it sustained an international culture that strung together groups as diverse as the Magyars, Armenians, and Chinese.

But it doesn't just stop there.

It also goes to sub-Saharan Africa, the kingdom of Aksum in northern Ethiopia and Eritrea.

That was Christian by the end of the fourth century.

There was likely a Christian presence there from the very beginning, from the apostolic generation.

And there's a documented tradition that the Ark of the Covenant went to Elephantine Island in six forty-two BC and then to Tana Kirkos Island at Lake Tana in Egypt.

This is, this is documented in Second Chronicles thirty-five, really, and I won't get into all that here other than from there it went to Axum and is presently at St. Mary's Zion Church.

And because of all this, uh, and they believe that their, their-- this is their commitment to present this to the Messiah when he rules on Mount Zion.

And there's Zephaniah three:ten, a whole chapter in Isaiah that deals with that presentation.

And that's in their Bible, interestingly enough.

Their claim is that they visited town of Kirkus at that time, which would fit the story.

And now they then went from there to Axum where it is today.

Another theory is that the Ethiopian Orthodox Jews claim that they have the Ark at a church in Axum, Ethiopia.

And apparently it got there by way of King Solomon's son that he had with the Queen of Sheba and the son was Menelik.

And supposedly, if you buy this theory, Menelik was given the Ark by King Solomon in order to safeguard it and get it away from all the conflict area of Jerusalem.

Interestingly, at the Church of St. Mary of Zion in Axum, Ethiopia, the Ark is not allowed to be seen by anyone, and it is guarded by one monk whose only duty in life is to guard the Ark until he dies.

The Aksum history is the relationship between Africa and the Arab world.
