The Avignon Papacy began in thirteen oh nine when the popes resided in Southern France rather than Rome.

For over seventy years, Rome wasn't even the seat of the Bishop of Rome.

The Black Death and other epidemics worsened the city's demographic problems.

But this isn't just some beef, some social media feud.

Washington has already signaled the possibility of a modern Avignon Papacy.

It's a direct reference to 1309, when the King of France forced the Pope out of Rome and into exile in Avignon, where he ran the Church as a political instrument for 68 years.

It's the ultimate threat of executive control, and if this escalates, everything changes.

Thus, the church's power of binding and loosing is exercised not only in the sacrament of penance, but also in the granting of indulgences.

The post-canonical ground is in Unigenitus Dei from 1343, which was promulgated by Clement VI, who was, by the way, for what it's worth, an Avignon Pope.
