Avadhuta

And it is said that Uddhava Gita is an ocean of Ananda.

So because of the amount of stories and so many interlinked different anecdotes, and we also saw the values, you know, instead of the 22 or 24 values in chapter 13 of Bhagavad Gita, Here he gives many, many, many, many more values, like the 24 lessons from the Avadhuta, and then there are so many other stories with multiple different values being explained.

And then Krishna describes himself as Nigamakrit, meaning he is the creator of the Vedas, he is the Vedas itself.

is kind of his last kind of thing before they basically get separated.

Shivarchanam, worship of Shiva.

Avadhuta Charya, the way of life for an Avadhuta or a realized ascetic characterized by the highest spiritual freedom.

With these few remarks of a prefatory nature, we send forth this English translation of an important poetical production of medieval India into the world of modern readers.

The translation has been made rather too closely literal, especially to suit the convenience of those readers who want to follow the original Sanskrit with its help.

Bhakti is all about complete, overwhelming love for God, so intense that it can look a lot like psychosis to the outsider.

Saints like the Avadhuta are described as mad in their ecstasy.

They abandon societal norms.

So we have started this study of, um, Avadhuta Gita.

Eight chapters is a short text, but we will only be able to dip our toe into this ocean because of time constraints.

But it's not that we are missing out, not that you are missing out on anything.

As I said, this, uh, book, like the Ashtavakra Gita, the Avadhuta Gita itself, also the Ribhu Gita, these are nididhyasana texts.

The texts which enable us to meditate on the non-dual truth which has already been ascertained.

Already we have heard about it.

To stay with that clarity, that is the purpose of these texts.
