Sue VercoeGUEST
14:10
I think through a range of different ways.
Sue VercoeGUEST
14:11
And I think the AICD Guide to Stakeholder Engagement that you released recently gives some really good overview of some of those ways.
Sue VercoeGUEST
14:18
I think it's a bit of a combination, first of all, of, you know, high quality research.
Sue VercoeGUEST
14:25
And I think boards should always ask for the full research reports and also a presentation from the research firm themselves with the ability to ask a lot of questions, delve into the sample composition, the way the questions were asked, you know, what's underneath the information.
Helga SvendsenHOST

Openness and transparency as much as possible helps to avoid, it doesn't help to avoid conflicts of interest, but it ensures that they are uncovered early and then dealt with early and transparently.
Cathy RobinsonGUEST
35:14
This observer is keen to have your view of a particular situation, which is that their board is considering making AICD training mandatory for all directors who are members of the board.
Cathy RobinsonGUEST
35:31
What do you reckon about that? Are
Helga SvendsenHOST
35:34
they going to pay
Julissa ShrewsburyGUEST
45:15
Also some around boards and what boards are talking about.
Julissa ShrewsburyGUEST
45:19
all the major associations have AICD has one or more podcasts.
Julissa ShrewsburyGUEST
45:25
There's many different versions of that, but also the ones that are coming from different countries because it's interesting to hear from different perspectives as well when in board discussion.
Julissa ShrewsburyGUEST
45:35
And news wise, I feel like I'm one of those people that's a bit of an emotional sponge.
Trisha GormanGUEST
27:34
And I'd also suggest you look at some of the training that's out there.
Trisha GormanGUEST
27:37
So AICD offers a really good company director's course that's excellent and basically teaches you kind of the different disciplines of what you need to understand to be a really efficient and effective board director.
Trisha GormanGUEST
27:50
And then I suppose I would suggest looking back on what I've done is look at the things that are important to you.
Trisha GormanGUEST
27:55
So, for example, you know, are there particular charities that's really important to you? And don't think that you need to go into a board to make money, right? So, you know, my advice now, I've been looking back on it, well, what boards do I want to be involved in that basically is important to me, the values that they want to do? So, for example, what charities do I want to align myself with so that I can then make a difference in that space.
Jennifer CowleyHOST
29:48
That's definitely a lot of the time it's the who you know.
Jennifer CowleyHOST
29:52
It's that a little bit of a networking thing.
Jennifer CowleyHOST
29:57
And Women on Boards, as a member of both Women on Boards and AICD, Women on Boards is amazing for networking and for supporting women.
Jennifer CowleyHOST
30:06
And there's a lot of women there that are happy to kind of support you, write your board applications and things.
TeganHOST
25:20
Have they
Leah MooreGUEST
25:20
done the AICD course? No.
Leah MooreGUEST
25:23
Have they got any board capabilities? No, but they do it anyway.
TeganHOST
25:28
Yeah.
Ben McEvoyGUEST
5:08
And he's been lighting the signal fires around digital governance expectations in boardrooms in Australia for a number of years now.
Ben McEvoyGUEST
5:18
This is his quote from an AICD presentation he gave in 2025.
Ben McEvoyGUEST
5:24
Australia is falling to the back of the pack in the global race for innovation.
Ben McEvoyGUEST
5:30
And he connects that to the capabilities of digital governance in corporate boardrooms.

Helen Van OttenGUEST
18:07
And it's to exactly your point.
Helen Van OttenGUEST
18:09
It moves from instead of just doing a whole load of samples on a data set and just picking up those anomalies, it's now moving from that instead of being 45 transactions and extrapolating the information to it's now becoming exception based so it's testing everything and going for the outliers um and that's a really big change and i think a lot of audit committees um haven't caught up with it uh i think a lot of us in the room at the time were hoping in fact they asked us to do a show of hands um and we all thought that the audit costs were going to come down sadly that wasn't the case uh it just means that the time from the auditors is going to be used differently um But to your wider question, Ben, around that pace of change, I think auditing is one element of one profession.
Helen Van OttenGUEST
18:54
But in the AICD survey that they did earlier this year, more than half of the directors surveyed were saying about the pace of change.
Helen Van OttenGUEST
19:02
is already faster than their organization can handle.
Anna CodyGUEST
16:10
So what is it that we can do to make our workplace the best place for people to come and
Kulja CoulstonHOST
16:14
work? You mentioned earlier about anonymous reporting and, I mean, the research undertaken by the AICD and ACSI and the Commission shortly after the positive duty commenced raised trust in reporting mechanisms or underreporting as an issue.
Kulja CoulstonHOST
16:30
Have you seen progress in that area over the past three years? I haven't
Anna CodyGUEST
16:35
yet.

Both partners in a merger situation need to be ready for a merger and it means you have to have your own house in order effectively before you look for merger partners so that you will be ready for that due diligence process or otherwise you're just going to be effectively buying someone else's problem or absorbing someone else's liabilities and you could end up with a worse financial position than you've currently got.
