Austin Hospital

A man under police guard in a Melbourne hospital has tried to escape through the roof in the city's inner north.

It happened just after 10 o'clock last night when a 21-year-old man attempted to flee Austin Hospital in Heidelberg.

The man remained on the roof for three hours before he came down and was taken back into custody.

He has since been charged over an alleged theft in Preston as well as escaping custody and criminal damage.

While I was having cancer treatment, which, you know, that makes you feel small, 'cause that's all your life is really, is you're just consumed by thinking about and dealing with cancer.

But there was w- a moment d- well, a half hour or so, um, and I was halfway through treatment, and I was sitting on a bed at, in the Austin Hospital, which is ironically in Heidelberg in Melbourne, not Germany, and I was waiting to have, um, a lumpectomy.

And I was looking out the window, and I could see where I went to school, where the church my parents got married in, the train line I traveled up and down on every day to get to and from my school.

I could see the football club, West Heidelberg, rough as guts football club, where my father spent every day of his adult life, the pub where my dad drank.
