Audit Commission

And in fact, what has, uh, kept corruption in check in this country since about the 1850s is a set of institutions that have functioned according to sets of values and sets of rules and so on.

And you've seen sometimes those have been entirely abolished, like the Audit Commission, um, sometimes gradually eroded, uh, sometimes assaulted, like the Electoral Commission, uh, by a previous Conservative government, and, uh, sometimes, uh, you see individuals who have just smashed their way through the norms, the most obvious example being Boris Johnson.

It's worthwhile remembering that when, uh, he, uh, left office in rather ignoble circumstances, uh, there were 40 alleged breaches of the ministerial code that were uninvestigated, let alone all the ones that have been investigated.

Now they never will be 'cause he's left office.
