Good point.
Bryce CaseyHOST

Twin Towers, even the Harbour Bridge.
Bryce CaseyHOST
20:23
There's unreal photos of the Auckland Harbour Bridge where people are just having their break and it's sort of been built halfway out into the water and they're just having a dark.
Bryce CaseyHOST

And if people want to come and find you, what's the location for people to come and have a meal and have a beer?
Mike SutherlandGUEST
59:27
So we're in Matakana, which is about 45 minutes north of the Harbour Bridge in Auckland, in the Maharangi region.
Mike SutherlandGUEST
59:40
Just go through the village before you turn off to Omaha, and we're just up the road there in a big black shed.
Mike SutherlandGUEST
59:45
nice
Hamish BollandHOST

Well, Sam, it's just you and I today, and we've got a really cool topic.
Hamish BollandHOST
0:25
We're going to discuss the Auckland Harbour Bridge and take a look at its history, the authority that delivered that bridge, the procurement model, the cost and programs, and basically the case that New Zealand considered as it looked to procure this major piece of nationally significant infrastructure.
Hamish BollandHOST
0:50
Pretty cool topic.
Hamish BollandHOST
0:51
I might throw to you first, Sam, to just discuss the outline of what people were trying to solve in the 1950s.
Hamish BollandHOST
5:32
They go through 1,200 pages of evidence and come out with basically a statement that a bridge is urgently necessary within 10 to 15 years.
Hamish BollandHOST
5:44
Tunnels rejected.
Hamish BollandHOST
5:46
Fast forward as you say, Sam, the authority is promulgated under a piece of legislation called the Auckland Harbour Bridge Act of 1950.
Hamish BollandHOST
5:56
And that authority is called the Auckland Harbour Bridge Authority.
Nigel GilmourGUEST
8:28
I'll try and run a marathon.
Nigel GilmourGUEST
8:30
And I did, and I blew up my IT band going over the Harbour Bridge, and I'd done it.
Nigel GilmourGUEST
8:36
I was like, oh, because you know how they do the raise money for foundations and stuff? I did it for the mental health, and I'd raised all this money, and I remember, I say running, I remember stumbling that last 10Ks going, if I give up now, I've given up on all of these people that I've raised money for.
Nigel GilmourGUEST
8:55
And it was the only thing that was just keeping me going.

Nigel GilmourGUEST
34:12
I was just bouncing on my toes and just G'd up and came for a race.
Nigel GilmourGUEST
34:16
And then I read the weather report and I kept checking it because I thought it was going to change for me, but it was like zero wind.
Nigel GilmourGUEST
34:25
And the temperature was like... 10 degrees at the start line at 6 o'clock and we turned up and it was exactly as it was prescribed during the week so the conditions were just fantastic and then yeah for the race I hadn't really discussed the race plan with Dwayne too much but he sent me a note the week leading up about just going first 16 kilometers just sit with the pacer second 16 just find your rhythm and then the final 10 just give it hell probably summarize that a little bit but um that was a general plan um which was really good because that kept playing in my head i knew i'd wanted to stick with the pacer for the first half to get over the bridge because i didn't want to ruin anything on the hills but um there was a few times i found myself having to look over my shoulder make sure i hadn't crept ahead of him too much um but he was really good this um this asian dude i didn't even grab his name and every kilometer he's like reading out all right guys we've gone 413 for that kilometer so we're bang on pace for oh we've got a bit of a hill coming up so we're going to give a just accept a little bit of a loss and we'll come down there like it was really good at communicating so i was And then we get to the Harbour Bridge and I don't like packs.
Nigel GilmourGUEST
35:47
Oh, I found out I don't like packs.
Jack MoodyHOST
4:10
Zero wind, just not a drop.
Jack MoodyHOST
4:12
And mill pond across the water I was like this is like everyone expects a pretty hard day it's not a great course Auckland Marathon for running fast but it is a awesome course for experiencing Auckland and what we have on offer with the waterfront running over the Harbour Bridge coming through Devonport Tackle Curtain like it is a wicked course but you're not there to set a very fast time like the other courses on offer so yeah and like running's in a good place in New Zealand yeah 20 odd thousand people and yeah fast as well like not just I'm not talking just at the pointy end like the sort of what we call like the amateur field like quite you know moving along at a pretty decent clip I thought
Bevan McKinnonHOST
4:53
Yeah, yeah, definitely.
Bevan McKinnonHOST
4:55
Well, records were broken.
Simon WilsonGUEST
4:37
Currently those are funded and controlled entirely by government.
Simon WilsonGUEST
4:40
That includes the Harbour Bridge.
Simon WilsonGUEST
4:43
He also wants a 30-year transport plan with agreed priorities and funding from government and council, but he wants bulk funding.
Simon WilsonGUEST
4:52
So instead of the Transport Agency and the Minister of Transport and the Cabinet deciding this road is what we're going to build, there would be bulk funding around those agreed general priorities first.
TeganHOST
59:49
Here's the thing.
TeganHOST
59:50
So you start in Devonport, and then you go right into Takapuna to Smales Farm, and then you run along the busway onto the motorway, over the Harbour Bridge, and then down to Vic Park, which is a cool one.
TeganHOST
60:02
Honestly, the first 10Ks, I was really good, and that's quite a hilly part of the course.
Nixon ClarkHOST
60:07
And that's your comfort zone around the 10km? Yeah,
Nixon ClarkHOST
61:02
part?
TeganHOST
61:03
The hardest part was probably once I got onto the motorway after Smales Farm because that long stretch, it's like pretty chill.
TeganHOST
61:10
There's not really much hill or anything, but it's such a long stretch in order just before you get to the Harbour Bridge that it felt like it dragged for ages.
TeganHOST
61:17
And that's probably when my body started to hurt.
Ryan BridgeHOST
6:52
Tangi Tukeri from Labour, James Mega from National.
Ryan BridgeHOST
6:55
If you are crossing the Harbour Bridge listening to this, don't expect another one next to you anytime soon.
Jeremy WellsHOST
4:13

Jeremy WellsHOST

Peter WolfkampHOST
2:24
They must have put the ferries on.
Peter WolfkampHOST
2:26
early this morning to get people across for the start of the Auckland Marathon, which takes off from sleepy little village of Devonport, tootles its way up through Takapuna, across the Harbour Bridge, out to the end of St Heliers, I think it is, and then back into the city.
Peter WolfkampHOST
2:40
So if you happen to be running the marathon or walking the marathon or the half marathon or the 10k, whichever one you choose to do today, I hope it goes well for you and congratulations for getting up early on a Sunday morning and getting stuck into the Auckland Marathon.
Peter WolfkampHOST
2:55
Rightio, if you would like to get stuck in though and maybe wake your neighbours up, launch into a DIY project, fire up the chainsaw, get the skill saw out, whip out the nail gun and get started with a project, well...

16 MINS LATER

Peter WolfkampHOST
19:10
Now, there's cones all the way down Lake Road.
Peter WolfkampHOST
19:12
There'd be cones all the way through Takapuna.
Peter WolfkampHOST
19:14
There's triple layers of lines of cones across the Harbour Bridge.
Peter WolfkampHOST
19:19
There's Esmond Road on ramp.
