Atlantic Forest

I see.

And now the other note on Brazil is I, in college I did a study abroad with Columbia University, and we were out in the Atlantic Forest.

And most people, you say the At-

What does that mean?

Exactly.

And so the Atlantic f- you know, you think of the Amazon, and to the north you have the Orinoco River Basin, which is another incredible rainforest river basin.

And then here, below the Amazon, southern, in, in southeast Brazil, you had the Atlantic Forest with a high endemism, a lot of species that occurred there and nowhere else.

You had the golden lion tamarin and all these other species.

However, at the Museu da Zoologia, The identification and sorting process for Leogides are quite advanced, which really help us at this early stage of the work.

Also, this museum holds a very large collection of specimens collected from the Atlantic Forest region here in southeastern Brazil, which is particularly interesting for us, not only because we get to explore and better understand our own local biodiversity, but also because this region is incredibly rich in species.

So this study really shows that five out of the eight species we described were collected here in the state of São Paulo.

And four of them were found in a biological station, which is the Boracéia Biological Station, or Estação Biológica de Boracéia, which is managed by the Museu de Zoologia itself, just a few hours away from the city of São Paulo.

And I really recommend hiking at least one way because the experience of getting there is part of what makes La Goiña do Leste so special.

You're hiking through the Atlantic forest and then eventually you start getting these incredible views of the coastline.

When you finally reach the beach, you have mountains on both sides, the ocean in front of you and the lagoon behind the beach.

It feels completely different from the developed parts of Florianopolis.

And that is exactly the kind of restoration industry that we need.

We need to move beyond that charity and nature as a charitable cause mindset into a mindset of the regenerative, the restoration economy taking off where you can restore all that 15 million hectares of degraded land across the Mata Atlantica into healthy, productive landscapes.

And agroforestry obviously is one of the best tools to do that there.

And of the $60 billion or so that it will cost to restore the 15 million hectares, of course, we have to tap into agri-food supply chains for that.
