Personal Branding That Gets You Booked: How Dr. Tekeisha Zimmerman Clarified Her Message and Landed Her First International Keynote
T
9:19Tekeisha ZimmermanGUEST
So one of the things that I struggled with the most was I actually have two books that are coming out.
T
9:25Tekeisha ZimmermanGUEST
So the first book is being published through ATD, and it is really my professional story.
T
9:30Tekeisha ZimmermanGUEST
I've worked in learning and development.
T
9:33Tekeisha ZimmermanGUEST
I really believe in motivating people and also giving them voice, and so that book is about a framework that I created.
T
9:41Tekeisha ZimmermanGUEST
At the same time, a few years ago, my family and I were impacted by the loss of my son very tragically, very suddenly to gun violence, and my second book is about that.
T
9:53Tekeisha ZimmermanGUEST
Where I was stuck is that all of the work that I've been doing for the past three years since my son passed away, including the book for ATD, was inspired by his life and his passing.
T
10:08Tekeisha ZimmermanGUEST
And having two books come out, and one is so deeply around a personal journey and grief and how that manifested itself in the workplace, and the other one being learning and development, which has been my 20-year career, I really didn't know how those things would come together.
T
10:26Tekeisha ZimmermanGUEST
And so before working with you, I would get people who would see that side, and they would say, "Oh, come and speak to our ERG about grief." And I was like, "Okay, I can do that." And then other people would say, "But you're a professor, so should I be talking to you about this?" And then that third lane of, "You're in L&D, so where do you fit?" And so all of those things made me, but I was just struggling with how do I share that so as not to confuse clients, and they really understood what to come to me for.
