ICYC 7 - Voting Matters!
R
1:49Rod PhilpotHOST
The system you're going to be using anytime soon, or you have used one name, one box, most vote wins.
R
1:55Rod PhilpotHOST
It's not the only system Canadians have ever used.
R
1:58Rod PhilpotHOST
It's not even the only system Ontarians have used.
R
2:01Rod PhilpotHOST
It's not even the only system this country's political parties have fought each over with over in parliament, using taxpayer money as a weapon.
R
2:30Rod PhilpotHOST
We're going to start by looking at a piece of almost forgotten Canadian electoral lore before going over exactly how your ballot works, especially this October.
R
2:39Rod PhilpotHOST
mechanically, step by step, including the money rules most voters never get to see.
R
2:43Rod PhilpotHOST
We'll spend a little bit considering the people who fought for voting rights before looking at what happened every single time Canadians, provincially, were offered a chance to change the electoral system entirely.
R
2:54Rod PhilpotHOST
And you might be surprised to learn that there have been more of those chances than you may have thought.
Alberta’s referendum: How we got here and what the future holds
J
5:17Julie SimmonsGUEST
Well, I think it's a number of factors, and I think we're seeing them in other provinces as well.
J
5:24Julie SimmonsGUEST
We have had immigration rates under the Trudeau government, which I think that a great number of Canadians outside of Alberta might also argue were adopted without thinking about the bigger problem.
J
5:41Julie SimmonsGUEST
or perhaps the other issues such as the impact of increasing our population that fast on our health care system, our education systems, on the ability of people to afford housing in Canada, and whether or not empirically those Statements can be backed up is one thing, but I think there's a lot of Canadians that perceive certainly that there have been stresses on all of our publicly funded systems as a result of increased immigration.
J
6:19Julie SimmonsGUEST
So So that's one thing.
J
6:21Julie SimmonsGUEST
And the other thing is, in general, we have seen a rise in populism in a number of provinces in Canada.

So I appreciate you, uh, giving that, that, that continuous look on what serving the government can look like.
C
32:48Claudio KlausHOST
And beyond all of these in- incredible things you've, you've done with your career so far, you've also been involved in mentoring, in professional organizations, the Asian Canadian legal community.
C
33:00Claudio KlausHOST
You, you did mention mentors a few times during this episode as well, so I wanted to ask you a little bit more on, on that.
C
33:07Claudio KlausHOST
You know, how, how important have been, you know, have mentors, professional communities, and identity been in shaping your career and your sense of responsibility to the next generation of lawyers as well?
K
33:19Karlson LeungGUEST
Yeah, and I'm so glad you touched on this point.
K
33:22Karlson LeungGUEST
It's something that personally I'm very passionate about as well and, you know, you mentioned that, uh, you know, uh, things like the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers or other community organizations that I've been part of, like the Advocate Society, all these organizations serve a crucial function in the legal profession and, and beyond that because the work of the, the legal profession, the work of the, the pu- these public organizations reflect the people they serve, right? And, you know, and the reason why we need the legal profession and public organizations like the government or other major organizations, um, you know, the reason why they need to be mindful of, you know, equity or diversity issues is because, you know, where there are gaps and blind spots in these things, you know, they, they can play out every day in the work that they carry out, right? So, and that can have real impacts on people that they serve.
K
34:18Karlson LeungGUEST
So, you know, if we're in a service delivery profession like the legal profession where we are serving the client, but we're also serving society and community and the larger aims of the, uh, administration of justice writ large, we need to take into account these issues through the lens of having an inclusive lens and, and factoring in these issues so that we're making sure that we're delivering services that are truly reflective of the needs of everyone in our community.
K
34:52Karlson LeungGUEST
So for me, I found that these organizations served a critical role in assisting me as a junior lawyer, too, when I first started off.
