They joined us this morning, uh, for Corruption Watch, and the focus for Corruption Watch this morning was on AstroTurfs.

Anti-corruption campaigner and Vice Chair of the Africa Union Advisory Board Against Corruption, Adam Senanu, is calling for clear laws and stronger sanctions to ensure public officials who commit crimes are prosecuted and held accountable.

AstroTurf became a major feature of the Nana Addo, uh, Nana Addo administration following the introduction of the One Constituency, One AstroTurf program, one of the government's flagship sports infrastructure initiatives.

But nearly a decade on, an investigation by Corruption Watch has uncovered troubling findings about the use of public funds in the construction of some of these facilities.

Here are excerpts from the documentary.

[dramatic music] The investigation has found that two senior officers who served under former President Akufo-Addo's administration, that is former Energy Minister John Peter Amewu and former Ghana Gas Communications Director Ernest Owusu Bempah, are at the center of ownership dispute of sports facilities in Hohoe and Agogo respectively, constructed largely with public funds valued at more than seventeen million Ghana cedis.

This exposé is the first in a nationwide investigative series which Corruption Watch started back in February twenty twenty-five examining one hundred and sixty-nine AstroTurf and sports infrastructure projects constructed across Ghana representing public investments estimated to exceed one billion cedis.

This edition focuses on three key anti-corruption issues: procurement irregularities, abuse of office, and conflict of interest.

The construction of the Hohoe Sports Stadium in the Volta Region and the Agogo Sports and Cultural Complex in the Ashanti Region were funded by state agencies under their respective corporate social responsibility programs.

You know, there's a real lack of even AstroTurf pitches.

I mean, you saw the winter we had last year, and, you know, clubs were finding it really hard to sustain teams through the winter into the spring.

Um, and I think city center clubs particularly are suffering with numbers simply because we cannot provide the facilities we need.

And, um, yeah, I'd, I just, uh, on that AstroTurf surface and everything.

So I don't, I'd feel like it's a bad match up for Orlando and I'm gonna go three-one New England, even though I would really rather get a point, at least one point out of that game.
