why are you laughing evening everybody welcome to another episode of why are you laughing a history of comedy podcast and today i am pleased to introduce to you howard stern versus arty lang the bro fight or uh the pelican fight as some of you may know it uh the famous riff between howard and arty a lot of stern uh historians or diehards would tell you that this is kind of where The riff started where Howard decided he was done with Artie Lange.

And ultimately, you know, an attempt on his own life is what caused Artie to leave the show.

But there was this line in the sand drawn where Artie was never allowed back.

Yeah.

But a girl emails or mails the show and says, hey, I'm really attracted to Artie.

I'm into bigger guys, and I'm attracted to Artie Lange.

So they have her in the studio, and Artie doesn't seem to be having a lot of fun with it.

Why You Laughing is back in full force.

You know, Howard would talk for 20 minutes, and I'd, I could say something funny every 20 minutes into the mic, and I'd get paid and-

And also, when the movie became a huge success, I always felt kind of cool that I knew it was gonna be a big hit.

So a couple years later, I'm driving somewhere with Artie Lange, and we're talking about movies, and he's talking about love, uh, you know, uh, relationship movies and stuff like that.

And I said, "You know, I've always li- I, I always liked Notting Hill," and it was also because I knew that it was gonna be a huge hit.

So he kept that on the back burner until we started this new show and, and [chuckles] man, did it blow up in my face.

But if I ha- if I had run into Roger Ebert on the way out or Gene Siskel or, um, who, the, the guy from The Reader or Dan Geyer or Roy Leonard, if Roy Leonard, uh, if I had run into Roy and he said, "I love the movie," it didn't hold the same weight as a Nick Digilio saying, "I really love this movie." So thank you for that because I stuck to my guns, and they finally all came my way.

Maybe you'll have me on one night, and I'll talk about being in a trailer where you are talking about, um, Artie Lange and Louis C.K., and I'm listening in the trailer when we were shooting, um, Crashing for HBO, and you start talking about Artie and Louis, and we call into your show, and your producer wouldn't put me on.
