Arthur Murray

You know, I'm a lousy dancer, man, you know? And, uh, you remember the Arthur Murray dancer, dance, uh, studio?

Yeah.

Yeah, because when I was growing up, uh, you had a choice.

You could go in a, a...

After school, they send you to Arthur Murray or s- to a dance class, you know, or you could play the accordion, you know? And they actually had the two places in the same place, and the parents would drop you off there.

You either go to tap dancing or you go to accordion.

I said, "Well, I got two left feet, so,"

So that, that is that street level thing, you know, of, of people that can dance well.

The, the people that don't have to go to dance, the people that go to Arthur Murray sometimes are not the good dancers really.

So it's, it's, it's a special thing.

There's a special...

And the number of pe- the lives that have been saved from, from inc- incredible.

And he got into it because he, he was married to, um, Jane Murray, one of Arthur Murray's twin daughters.

And she was, um, way into, um, alternative medicines at the time.

She wrote that book, Which Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You, which helped Hank a lot in terms of his w- medicine.

And I have to say, the first time I ever took first place, it was at the Brown competition my second year of dancing as a silver level dancer, and I remember we were doing well, and right before the finals, one of the coaches said, "Hey, this move you're doing, you can't do it." Because in ballroom dancing, you have bronze, silver, gold, and there are certain steps you're allowed at each.

We said, "No, Arthur Murray told us this is an allowed silver step." He was like, "No, I know their syllabus.

You're not allowed." And so we had to scrap our routine and just do the basic step, the one basic step over and over.

I remember being so pissed-

You know, you're a pretty good dancer.

Only I didn't come here to dance.

Oh.

Almost every big player in that circle, they called it a council because we all pitched in to pay for the meeting rooms and so on.

Almost everybody in that council, that circle of people who was doing well, had been an Arthur Murray Gantz instructor.

And several of them had been so good at being an Arthur Murray dance instructor, they were banned from being in the state of North Carolina.

Literally could not be in the state of North Carolina because they had gotten little old ladies and sold them three or four lifetime dance memberships.

You generally only need one lifetime.
