Let's start with The Woman in Black.

You have Daniel Radcliffe playing Arthur Kipps, a deeply grieving widowed lawyer who is sent to settle an estate at Eel Marsh House, which is this decaying manor in a remarkably remote hostel village.

And the adaptation of Susan Hill's novel here is incredibly tactile.

Spoilers! kill arthur kipps's wife and child at the end of the book or actually even better why does it end with enough i've told my story at book close why has it done that and maybe take um a couple of answers from a couple of the quieter kids in the class and and see see whether or not um as i said that kind of misconception is maybe symptomatic That's the way I would adapt to that.

But if I didn't adapt it, it would still be a really good start to the lesson going around, like I said, weaving through the crowds and enjoying them thinking deeply about this question.

This is just kind of come from the beginning of the lesson where they're really having to go back in their mind, sit back in their memory and think, What was I told about this? What do I think about this? What do I remember? And really enjoy the moments and the luxury of time within that lesson to explore those moments.

For me, right at the top of my list is Susan Hill's 1983 Gothic horror novel The Woman in Black.

If you don't know it, the book tells the story of junior solicitor Arthur Kipps, who's sent to the village of Crythin Gifford to attend the funeral and settle the estate of the reclusive Mrs. Alice Drablow.

At the funeral, Arthur's sighting of a pale-faced woman wearing black mourning clothes is the catalyst for an increasingly terrifying series of events which have a long-lasting and a tragic impact on his life.

Aside from the novel, which is an amazing read in its own right, there have to my mind been two definitive adaptations into other formats.

Viewers have often noted that what followed was the most welcome ad break in the history of television.

For the 200th episode of the Folklore Podcast, I'm delighted to be able to reunite the main cast and other players from that television adaptation for the first time in nearly 40 years.

They are actor Adrian Rawlins, who played Arthur Kipps, called Kid in this version, and who many listeners will now know as James Potter from the Harry Potter film franchise Alongside Adrian is Pauline Moran, who played the woman in black and went on to become one of the most loved British crime drama actors for her role as Miss Lemon in the adaptations of Agatha Christie's Poirot.

Joining them are members of the family of Herbert Wise, the respected TV and film director who, as well as The Woman in Black, also directed I, Claudius, and a show we've featured on the podcast before, The Tenth Kingdom.

It's based on Susan Hill's 1983 novel, but it had already been adapted into a television movie and a highly successful stage play long before Daniel Radcliffe took on the lead role in this, uh, cinematic version.

Radcliffe plays Arthur Kipps, a young widowed lawyer in the early 1900s.

He travels to a remote, isolated village to sort through the documents of a deceased client at an old marshland estate.
