"And I!" said Lord Godalming, each of them in turn kneeling to her to take the oath.

I followed, myself.

Then her husband turned to her, wan-eyed and with a greenish pallor which subdued the snowy whiteness of his hair, and asked: "And must I, too, make such a promise, oh, my wife?" "You too, my dearest," she said, with infinite yearning of pity in her voice and eyes.

Strange as it all was, bizarre as it may hereafter seem even to us who felt its potent influence at the time, it comforted us much.

And the silence, which showed Mrs. Harker's coming relapse from her freedom of soul, did not seem so full of despair to any of us as we had dreaded.

Van Helsing motioned to me to come with him quietly.

We went to his room, and within a minute Lord Godalming, Dr. Seward, and Mr. Morris were with us also.

He told them what Mina had said, and went on

"In the morning we shall leave for Varna.

I have a kind of belief in a Winchester when there's any trouble of that sort around.

Do you remember, Art, when we had the pack after us at Tobolsk? [laughs] Oh, what we wouldn't have given then for a repeater apiece.

Good, said Van Helsing.

Winchesters it shall be.

Van Helsing at once." "I will go," He said, and hurried into the professor's room.

In two or three minutes later, Van Helsing was in the room in his dressing gown, and Mr. Morris and Lord Godalming were there with Dr. Seward at the door asking questions.

When the professor saw Mina, a smile, a positive smile ousted the anxiety of his face.

He rubbed his hands as he said

The Professor repeated the conversation, and she said...

Then there is not a moment to lose; it may not be yet too late.

Mr. Morris and Lord Godalming started for the door but the Professor’s calm voice called them back.

Stay, my friends.

As he was speaking there was a soft tapping at the door.

I went over and opened it and found in the corridor without Arthur and Quincy in pajamas and slippers.

The former spoke.

I heard your man call up Dr.

He will have his book of checks.

There are many belongings that he must have somewhere.

Why not in this place so central, so quiet, where he come and go by the front or the back at all hour, when in the very fast of the traffic there is none to notice? We shall go there and search that house, and when we learn what it holds, then we do what our friend Arthur call in his phrases of hunt stop the earths, and so we run down our old fox.

So is it not?
