Um, that's when Oxford University came back into the running and they wanted me to go and do particle physics there.

But the professor in Durham, head of department, was a man called Sir Arnold Wolfendale, who was Astronomer Royal at the time.

Oh, wow.

He was, um, he was someone who wanted to get his own way most of the time.
