It stands for Armalite Research.

After the patent expired in 1977, several manufacturers began producing their own models, and AR-15 became a generic term for those weapons.

I mean, not everybody makes ARs now.

The AR-15 rifle is a type of semi-automatic rifle, meaning that it fires only one shot, Each time, the shooter pulls the trigger.
