On Friday, August 28th, essentially what the Russians did is they test launched one of their Yars 24 or SS 27 mod two, uh, ICBMs.

They condemned including Benjamin, Metropolitan of Petrograd himself.

And to this, to the earlier case in Moscow, when 54 ecclesiastics were tried and 12 of them sent for execution, there must be added instances in the provinces of Chernigov, Poltava, Smolensk, Arkhangelsk, Staraya Rusa, Novocherkassk, and Vitebsk, where clergy were shot in batches.

from one to four on charges of having protested against the spoilment of sacred ornaments.

With these executions for clerical counter-revolution went shootings after purely political trials on charges of having belonged to non-existent counter-revolutionary organizations.

Russia's exit from the war presented a significant problem for her former allies.

The Allies had sent large amounts of supply to Russia since 1914, largely via three main ports, Arkhangelsk, Murmansk, and Vladivostok.

And had been building up in warehouses.

Also at risk was the Czechoslovak Legion, where a volunteer force of ethnic Czechs and Slovaks, along with former Austro-Hungarian soldiers recruited from POW camps, hoped to win support for an independent state after the war.

Various other forces, such as Ukrainian anarchists and numerous others, battled across the country.

British forces landed in Murmansk in March 1918, the day after the signing of the Brest-Litovsk Treaty.

In August, White Russians had overthrown the government in Archangel, and Allied units, including a small contingent of Americans, entered the city in August 1918.

The United States had entered the Great War only in April of 1917, with troops arriving on the Western Front as soon as June of 1917.

He had access to the ocean only in the latitude in which navigation is, during a great part of every year, perilous and difficult.

On the ocean he had only a single port, Archangel, and the whole shipping of Archangel was foreign.

There did not exist a Russian vessel larger than a fishing boat.

Yet from some cause which cannot now be traced, he had a taste for maritime pursuits, which amounted to a passion, indeed, almost to a monomania.
