Switching to Arch Linux | Part 1 | 10 Day Challenge
C
5:01Chris TitusHOST
Pacman, I rate probably below DNF and APT, as I don't particularly care for much of the syntax, you know, dash dash no confirm, and other just nonsensical stuff that I just don't particularly care for.
C
5:14Chris TitusHOST
However, you don't install Arch for Pacman, you install it for the AUR, or the Arch User Repository.
C
5:22Chris TitusHOST
I thought this would be pretty cool, and it is cool.
C
5:24Chris TitusHOST
Don't get me wrong here.
C
5:26Chris TitusHOST
It's pretty darn awesome.
C
5:28Chris TitusHOST
But the wrappers choosing, you know, you have YoArch, you have all these other different wrappers.
C
5:36Chris TitusHOST
And I had to do some research, and I've settled on Ye for installing the AURs.
C
5:43Chris TitusHOST
If there's a package in AUR or Arch User Repository, I would... use Ye.
Switching to Arch Linux | Part 2 | 10 Day Challenge
C

But it's very specific to those games.
C
6:05Chris TitusHOST
overall this made it so much easier because i could just get on lutris and say hey it's using you know uh e-sync or it would be using this version of vulcan it was very easy to get that and install it where before you'd go through this build process and go to a GitHub page, clone it, and then do all that BS, and having the AUR either automatically build it if it needs a build, or having the package already just sitting there and you just hit install.
C
6:39Chris TitusHOST
Arch makes that very seamless, which my hat's off to them, and I've had probably the best gaming experience thus yet on Linux using Arch.
C
6:49Chris TitusHOST
I did not expect that at all.
3 Linux Distros, 3 Types of Users - Which One Are You?
C
9:52Chris TitusHOST
A lot of people like want to use a GUI tool that comes baked into their distro.
C
9:58Chris TitusHOST
All of them kind of suck because what ends up happening is if you're installing stuff through the AUR in an Arch Linux spin, well, a lot of times it uses like Python dependencies and other things that were installed for specific packages.
C
10:10Chris TitusHOST
And then those never get updated, but then the base underlying dependencies get updated and then you have a whole mess on your hands.
C
10:17Chris TitusHOST
TopGrade kind of solves all of that.
C
12:31Chris TitusHOST
You can use a Debian package manager like apps.
C
12:33Chris TitusHOST
You can use, uh, arch Pac-Man.
C
12:36Chris TitusHOST
You could use the AUR on this sucker.
C
12:38Chris TitusHOST
You can do anything.
Stop Breaking Linux Updates - Use Topgrade!
C
0:32Chris TitusHOST
I'm already up to date.
C
0:33Chris TitusHOST
I have one out-of-date package, Synergy, but that's actually newer than the one in the AUR because they don't update the AUR.
C
0:40Chris TitusHOST
I digress.
C
0:42Chris TitusHOST
Most people would see this and go, good, I'm done.
C
0:46Chris TitusHOST
But I want to talk about top grade specifically because a lot of people will go install stuff from source, the AUR, many other things, whether you're on OpenSUSE, Debian, Ubuntu, whatever it is.
C
1:00Chris TitusHOST
A lot of people will install Flatpaks, AppImages.
C
1:03Chris TitusHOST
What about those? What about your NeoVim? If you use NeoVim, you might have all these different plugins.
Omarchy: Arch Savior or Overhyped Reskin?
C
1:20Chris TitusHOST
What is it? It is a tiling window manager, Hyperland, on Arch Linux.
C
1:25Chris TitusHOST
Even though it says Omachi and it runs its own repos in AUR, those are direct mirrors from Arch Linux, one-to-one from everything I've looked at.
C
1:33Chris TitusHOST
So pretty much if it's on Arch, it's on Omachi, and it's one and the same.
C
1:38Chris TitusHOST
But Omachi takes its own repos and hosts everything.
Omarchy Can Do WHAT?! 50 Features You’re Missing

What so many options packages from the official arch and Omachi Omachi repositories.
N
6:42Network ChuckHOST
The AUR is the arch user repository.
N
6:44Network ChuckHOST
Be careful there.

Anybody can just throw things up there hitting package.
485: Destination Linux 485: Craig from Sandfly on Linux Malware Trends, OpenRGB Upgrades & Big Distro News
C
3:45Craig RowlandGUEST
You know how much I love Arch.
R
3:47RyanHOST
So to catch everybody up in case you're like, what are they talking about? Ian is referring to the fact that AOR recently got hit with a bunch of, I guess, malware within the AUR that was out there.
R
4:02RyanHOST
And so they've been working and at one point even had to basically stop any future updates in AUR until they got things under control because it was just under a constant attack.
R
4:13RyanHOST
So that's them basically saying that this is them discussing that news.
R
4:19RyanHOST
They go on to say, a normal distro maintainer pulls from upstream, adapts the code to the distro's current library and folder structure.
R
4:45RyanHOST
Arch simply provides warnings and potential solutions.
R
4:48RyanHOST
They do not have any policy regarding package intercompatibility.
R
4:51RyanHOST
Arch users develop have long presented AUR as a primary benefit of running Arch latest packages and dis any downstream distro that holds off on package updates.
