That fantastic joy of computers and of discovering things.
Fredrik AhlgrenHOST
28:57
He installs NixOS and Arch Linux and everything he can get hold of.
Fredrik AhlgrenHOST
29:02
Everything has to be modded and tweaked, and he puts a great many hours every week into programming.
Fredrik AhlgrenHOST
29:08
He's really driven to optimize, which is great fun.
Will SmithHOST

One thing is Dell is reasonably good about listing the hardware that they actually support.
Will SmithHOST
48:32
The Arch Wiki and the Ubuntu hardware here are also good for showing you which machines are supported and what you're going to have trouble with on different distros.
Will SmithHOST
48:42
So usually when I'm buying hardware to use with Linux, I cross-reference A, the manufacturer, especially if it's somebody like System76 or Framework or Lenovo or Dell, who has pretty good Linux support.
Will SmithHOST
48:58
And then I look at those user-supported areas.
Chris TitusHOST

In this video I go over installing Arch Linux for the very first time.
Chris TitusHOST
0:17
so disclaimer on this video I'm just getting back from a Christmas party so I'm feeling pretty good and I figure what better time than trying to install Arch Linux for the very first time right now in a virtual machine so this isn't actually on my main system here mainly I don't have the hardware and everything set up to do that type of video just yet but hey hey hey we're live here this is I'm not even gonna edit that out Alright, whatever.
Chris TitusHOST
0:49
So, Arch Linux.
Chris TitusHOST
0:52
Arch Linux is getting installed right now by me.
Chris TitusHOST
0:56
I'm not drunk.
Chris TitusHOST
0:58
Just for the record.
Chris TitusHOST
4:58
Writing super blocks, done.
Chris TitusHOST
5:00
That sounds like it's good.
Chris TitusHOST
0:00
So this is my final day of the Arch Linux 10 day challenge and what a ride it has been.
Chris TitusHOST
0:07
Probably the highest highs and the lowest lows of all, but I'm about to get in that in a second.
Chris TitusHOST
0:19
arch linux oh man i now i want to say this is video four you're not crazy i said five videos but i have just been so swamped with trying to make uh content for everything and i just didn't have anything for the fourth video that midway marker between five and ten where i was just constantly around trying to make other videos um but I didn't really have anything to make an Arch fourth video kind of a stopgap because I didn't want to just make a video to make a video if there's no substance.
Chris TitusHOST
0:50
So, Arch, since I recovered the kernel from day five, you saw how upset I was on that, but to be expected.
Chris TitusHOST
1:01
It's been good.
Chris TitusHOST
5:46
I haven't had any lockups or problems with that.
Chris TitusHOST
5:49
So my lockups and everything are very isolated to my main system here, which you guys saw the Neo Fetch is in other videos is a Vega 64, a Ryzen 1700 with 16 gigs of memory.
Chris TitusHOST
6:04
and i installed pretty much everything under the sun on this system so uh to say i had some issues to be expected uh but overall i love vanilla arch it's really good it's not something i'd ever recommend a beginner go for uh it's definitely meant for someone that understands a lot of the linux concepts prior to jumping into it but This is the final wrap up, the final Arch Linux video, unless some other thing pops up where I completely missed a section of Arch Linux.
Chris TitusHOST
0:01
Switching to Arch Linux, day one.
Chris TitusHOST
0:17
Oh man, guys.
Chris TitusHOST
0:20
This was an adventure.
Chris TitusHOST
0:32
But...
Chris TitusHOST
0:34
I was not ready for this.
Chris TitusHOST
0:36
Just straight up, I didn't exactly grasp the concept of Arch Linux.
Chris TitusHOST
0:41
Just, I'm going to come out and just lay that out.
Chris TitusHOST
0:43
I mean, I thought Arch Linux, oh sure, you know, you install it, follow a couple guides, bam, you're up and going.
Chris TitusHOST
0:01
This is day three in switching to Arch Linux.
Chris TitusHOST
0:16
So this is gonna be video two out of five.
Chris TitusHOST
0:18
If you hadn't checked out day one, it's up there.
Chris TitusHOST
0:49
However, someone in the comments said, hey, try out PAMAC or it's basically a GUI for package management.
Chris TitusHOST
0:57
It is way better than Terminal, which is hilarious because I know Linux, since time has been time, hey, you drop to Terminal to really be efficient at installing packages.
Chris TitusHOST
1:07
Well, in Arch Linux, I mean, this is technically not the case unless you're installing, you know, 10 or more packages, you know.
Chris TitusHOST
1:13
And even then, a lot of times if you have to look them up, it's easier to do it in the GUI and just using the search tool.
Chris TitusHOST
1:20
So, wow, really, really impressed by this Arch Linux because a lot of people don't like using Terminal.
Chris TitusHOST
0:01
Day five, switching to Arch Linux.
Chris TitusHOST
0:05
Could go better, that's for damn sure.
speaker_1UNKNOWN
0:13
Damn you, Arch Linux.
speaker_1UNKNOWN
0:16
I let you into my house and then you come in and do this to me after I said so many nice things about you.
speaker_1UNKNOWN
0:25
Oh,
Chris TitusHOST
0:39
And I think how DHH set this up, which Oma Archie, I think Oma just means like, hey, you prepare what the chef made you kind of thing.
Chris TitusHOST
0:49
And Archie is for Arch Linux.
Chris TitusHOST
0:51
How Well, it wouldn't be me if I didn't change things.
Chris TitusHOST
0:56
So we're going to get out of this really fancy screensaver that is ridiculous and pretty cool.
Chris TitusHOST
9:43
And that's where they test out a lot of things.
Chris TitusHOST
9:46
And OpenSUSE has a rolling release like an Arch Linux, which means everything stays up to date.
Chris TitusHOST
9:53
On I think it's Tumbleweed that has the rolling release where Leap is more of a Ubuntu style where it updates every six months to a year, I believe.
Chris TitusHOST
10:05
So let's go into Red Hat Linux.
Chris TitusHOST
12:12
And CentOS should follow shortly thereafter.
Chris TitusHOST
12:15
And they will switch the package manager to DNF.
Chris TitusHOST
12:20
and yum is what they are on right now both are pretty much the same dnf's a little bit better about finding dependencies where yum is still a little bit older people have released like yum 4 that helps with that but overall i highly recommend just using dnf when you can if you're using fedora most of your install commands will be dnf and if you're using an older version of centos or redhat 7 and before it's all going to be um but um that's it for this branch i'm not going to mention any of these other distributions because i don't recommend any of them uh the only thing that i might pause to say is hey oracle linux that's interesting but not something i recommend someone doing it's going to be one out of maybe 100 businesses that are going to be running that um most of all this other stuff is all going to be your those three are the ones you need to learn everything else uh there might be the obscure business that uses it but for the most part nobody else is going to be messing with it and you shouldn't either these are the three you should stick stick to in this fork and if you're just getting into it and you want to learn enterprise linux stick with fedora tinker around a lot of people like to run it as its main thing on my work pc it's what i run i use fedora 29 i'm bleeding edge at work for this at home i use a deviant based system but this is what i'm using right now All right, let's jump into the final part I wanted to go over, Arch Linux.
Chris TitusHOST
13:59
Now, you're like, you're jumping right over Gentoo.
Chris TitusHOST
1:00
And if you actually want to see the full-blown as it happened eight years ago, I documented this entire experience.
Chris TitusHOST
1:07
So I did Arch Linux for 10 days.
Chris TitusHOST
1:09
I did Ubuntu for 30 days.
Chris TitusHOST
1:11
I think there's a Fedora challenge in there.

9 MINS LATER

Chris TitusHOST
9:47
And I think this is just like an inherent Linux thing.
Chris TitusHOST
9:50
I always like to tinker a bit but I pretty much stopped distro hopping at this point in time, and I just stick to the big three.
Chris TitusHOST
9:57
Fedora, Arch, Debian, or a variant of that.
Chris TitusHOST
10:00
I don't really do much past that.
