AppleTalk

One thing that I have always wondered about is the reason that the Internet exists is the idea of interoperable standards.

There were a bunch of early things that came out like, oh, Apple Talk, sure, great, IPX, ISPX, that, yeah.

Things that I don't even remember because they did not win.

TCP on top of IP did.

We had Adobe's PostScript software in there.

We had AppleTalk in there.

Just awesome technology in the box.

And I remember seeing the first printout come out of it and just picking it up And looking at it and thinking, you know, we can sell this.

And of course, no, it didn't work.

Then they came out with AppleTalk.

Was it Apple talk? Not Apple talk.

It was, was it Apple talk?

There were proprietary types.

There was AppleTalk.

But Ethernet's the one that won.

All of those had their advantages and disadvantages, but we all went with Ethernet.

Wow.

All the time we saved in planning let my dad start to catch up on Linux Unplugged episodes, as well as time to argue about the relative merits of supporting legacy and outdated protocols in the kernel, such as AppleTalk.

Yeah, buddy.

So definitely not a Mac user.

Well, with the release of Linux 7.2.

It is the end of AppleTalk, and it is the end of our sticker.

We'll have to remove it from the store this week, so if you want to get your commemoral sticker, now's the time.

It's like we're making a coin for AppleTalk, but it's a sticker.

I'll not dwell on this.

The audience knows how I feel about this.
