And the sole purpose of this pipeline was mass ingestion and analysis.

It autonomously downloaded 1.8 million distinct Android application packages, APKs, from all these various third-party app stores.

Okay, so just to clarify for anyone who might not know, an APK is basically just the package file format that Android uses to distribute and install apps, right?

Exactly.

But we are carefully pulling out their wallet, checking their ID, reading their receipts and, you know, examining their tattoos.

And in a technical context, that static search is when you decompile the Android APK.

You're looking at the resting code to see what system permissions it requested in the manifest file.

You're pulling strings to find hard-coded URLs.

So the second story that came tied for first with 37% of the vote was the fact over at 9to5, Google covered the fact that Android Auto is testing some quick settings and actually had an Easter egg dedicated to everyone's favorite mutated raccoon, Jimothy.

They did a APK teardown of Android Auto 17.6, and they've got kind of two very different things behind the scenes, one useful and one completely bonkers.

So the first one is the quick settings tiles coming to the car interface.

So basically – Digging into the notification shade shows a dedicated toggle for do not disturb setting, which is setting the stage for easier in-car system toggles without digging through menus, which honestly, as a driver, is a wonderful thing because you don't want to dig through menus when you're driving.

Anyway, so the second thing in the APK teardown of Android Auto 17.6 is an internal flag called Jimothy Mode.

And when you enable it, Jimothy walks across your dashboard popping up on top of the music widget with real-time temperature and weather animations.

... or you know somebody who's building apps and you do the same, but with the applications that they're building.

It's true sideloading, it's just like an APK on Android basically, where it's up to you what you install, but you've gotta go and find it.

Yeah.

Now obviously that's great.

Because the environment isn't actively fighting your attempts to inspect it, the initial approach actually relies heavily on automation.

So the first instinct is to take the malicious Android application package, the APK, and submit it to an online malware sandbox, right? Something like hybrid analysis.

Exactly.

These cloud-based sandboxes are incredibly robust.

But hold on.

Let's say you're an incident responder for a Fortune 500 company, and you extract a highly targeted bespoke piece of espionage malware from an executive's device.

If I upload that highly sensitive corporate APK to a public website like hybrid analysis, didn't I just expose my company's breach to the entire Internet? The attackers immediately know I found their tool.
