This is an example that I think I wrote about in the book, but it kind of demonstrates this.

I had said to students in a class where they had a discussion board assignment, you don't need to write in the formal academic style and you don't need to use APA citation.

That's not the point of this assignment.

The point is something else to discuss or to offer your own opinion on the readings.

But then even after I had said this a lot of times, I saw some students were still doing it.

They were still writing a formal introduction sentence.

They were still doing parenthetical citations and the APA reference formatting.

I kept thinking about it and I eventually asked some of them.

I always favored footnotes.

And according to the APA and APA citation, I don't know why the APA, which is literally the American Psychological Association, I don't know why that became convention, but it did become convention.

And that format I favor.

Because what's considered correct, according to APA, as of 2026, is you'll assign a footnote.

You'll put your citation.

And then if you've got further exposition, either of your own or from the source material, you would include it in that citation.

I mean, we've seen JBL in some bar fights.

We have, but at the same time, if any of you listened to Insight with Chris Van Vliet this week, he had the APA on.
