Annihilation

A stress meter wouldn't be a bad thing.

Speaking about Zone, which, much like Annihilation, has a very roadside picnic, stalker feel to it.

And there is a stalker RPG, but I don't think it mechanizes... quite as well.

It's almost completely freeform.

Event Horizon is the classic example, what with 40K fans having spent years coming up with fan theory after fan theory on why it definitely takes place in the Warhammer universe.

But there are a bunch of other movies that capture the essence of the grimdark incredibly well, from Starship Troopers' bloody gory bug battles and biting social commentary, to Annihilation's depiction of a landscape being twisted and corrupted by forces beyond our comprehension.

All of the films we're going to be discussing today will definitely scratch the itch if, like me, you're tired of waiting on GW to give us a proper 40k film.

And the thing only focuses on a single Zeenchian entity, not a full-scale demonic incursion, which would be far more horrifying.

In fact, the next film we're going to talk about shows what happens when Zeench begins to corrupt an entire environment.

The film Annihilation follows a group of scientists as they come face to face with the horrors of a mysterious expanding dimension known simply as Area X.

This zone is characterized by an ominous shimmering wall of light that is rapidly expanding, and if left uncontained, threatens to consume the entire world.

Especially if there's metaphorical value or subtextual value.

Perfect example is the book Annihilation and the movie Annihilation.

Sure.

I love both of them.

You know, magic, nobody's ever seen the magic that we did in the film, but we still have to base it on reality and understanding.

You've worked on a number of sci-fi productions like the cosmic horror film Annihilation and the TV series Foundation.

Can you tell me some of your favorite VFX moments from working in this genre and what was happening behind the scenes?

The great thing about sci-fi for visual effects is that you are dealing in an imaginary world.

That's so cool.

So that was really good.

And then Annihilation was a different one because it was more like an arthouse film.

So just to see somebody's vision come to life was fantastic.

But that but that movie really was chilling as a child.

But as an adult, I would say Hereditary is maybe like the like Hereditary is a movie that I walked out of even Annihilation, which deals with aliens.

Like those are movies I walked out of and like for like three or four days, I was just like, ugh.

Yeah, see, those are movies I just don't, I have no interest in going to see in the theater, no interest in watching it at home.

All right.

There's a recent movie from 2018 called Annihilation, which now having seen Color Out of Space and understanding that story, Annihilation was, it was based on a book, but the writer of the book was obviously heavily influenced by Color Out of Space because the story is a meteorite land somewhere in the Florida Everglades and it starts to mutate flora and fauna down there and people are sent in to find out about it, and their brains start to get affected during that as well.

Comic books.

There's so much stuff with horror in comic books.

I was in my mind visually while watching this.

I was like, this could kind of pair well with Annihilation visually in terms of the way the plant life grows and the weird animals that kind of pop up with the strange thing.

But also, I would say Annihilation... crossed with the thing is like this movie yeah yeah oh hell yeah it annihilation plus body horror and some of the crazy body horror i've ever seen yeah oh yeah yeah it's good

another thing that i that i will gush over for this movie is the soundtrack or the the composition like it gives you very um tangerine dream kind of vibe sometimes like i kind of pick up on some of that inspiration uh the composer is colin stetson who uh did uh did a hereditary
