These are men who have since their early to mid-20s learned that they can bend the world to their will if only they become pitiable.

Uh, Anna Wiener in, in her book, Uncanny Valley, has a really lovely ex- uh, um, sort of riff on this where it's a form of labor extraction.

It's a form of extracting emotional labor, and it's a form of, of course, also devaluing that emotional labor because it's, you're getting it for free.

You're basically pulling one over on everyone else, right? By being like, "Oh, guys, I would really like to stick around all, you know, all day and work with me on this because otherwise I'll be so lonely," right? And in the end, like what you're getting is free labor from people, right? Um, and, and I think that as these people get older, they're different from like a Howard Hughes who's just, who has the decency of just going crazy in his Vegas penthouse and wearing Kleenex boxes for shoes, right? Like, that doesn't impinge on me.

I did the work to try to put myself back in to different things, running it back and forth with people that were around at the time.

And, you know, yeah, it sort of just came out because I really wish and I've seen like the woman who wrote Anna Wiener who wrote a book which is called Uncanny Valley and a great tech memoir I think she came into the industry as a writer and you know with aspirations to write and it just the book felt to me like she had incredible real time documentation and even careless people where it's a shorter period of time but she had like a lot of dialogue from like being on the private plane and you're with Sheryl Sandberg and like you're reconstructing conversations in my book it's pretty clear that I would say sometimes I'll say, you know, they said something like or also a lot of times the other amazing thing that I had that was the complete tentpole of the book, of the writing of the book.

So much so that I almost titled the book Performance Review.

I sent my parents all my performance reviews, which is so embarrassing.
