There would have been very few private dwellings there, heavily forested, and a place that people came to, maybe stayed one or two nights and then came home again.

So how does it come under British control and what role did the Anglo-Gurkha War and the Treaty of Saghali play in all of it?

This part of the Himalaya was, you know, that borderland.

I mean, now we know very clearly there were borders between India and Pakistan, between India and Nepal.

So they had to make sure that their borders on the north were secure.

And that meant dealing with this rather ambitious King of Gurkha.

There were three wars, the Anglo-Gurkha War of 1808-1809, These areas were invaded and occupied by the Gokha King.

The local chiefs then sought protection from the East India Company.
