But it's it's funny because we knew there was going to be a drop off you're replacing two of the best linebackers in the big 12 last year especially with caleb so there's obviously going to be a drop off and us as media and the fans at home watching the games they're just going to have to not not come to the realization they're not going to have a linebacker like caleb but there's going to have to be a line somewhere to where your expectations aren't going to be so high and you're just going to be able to get by with a linebacker that's going to turn in six to seven tackles and hopefully get a little bit better at pass coverage because Arkansas State, they're probably going to spread the field out and they're probably going to do some slot slants to try to get some mismatches with the linebackers like we saw tonight.

it is one of those things though where in year three of an Andy Avalos defense with the type of defensive line that you've constructed or that you feel like you've constructed you know there are some some chinks in the armor I think that are a little bit concerning just because you know this is supposed to be kind of the peak year in this defensive cycle and or maybe it was supposed to be last year just with the personnel that they had but uh when you have a drop-off which is natural after losing two NFL linebackers I think what you want to see as a fan is how did they go and minimize that drop off in the off season and the two addition really the one addition was Michael short in that room uh and so you know there was kind of a uh know i don't know i wouldn't qualify it as a miss or a mistake or anything we're two games into the season but it is something to kind of keep an eye on to say they addressed a lot this offseason and they had to address a lot this offseason they unexpectedly had to go and get a new quarterback and that costs quite a bit of money but you know when when you don't go and attack that position group or that room with veteran talent in the portal It leaves you open a little bit, and it leaves you susceptible, and we've started to see that kind of come to fruition over the first two games of the season.
Jamie PlunkettHOST
24:31
Overall, though, again, we're picking at knits here after a 63-7 win.
Jamie PlunkettHOST
24:36
Things will get tougher and more challenging for TCU down the road.
Darian GrayHOST
27:59
You got some work on the interior from, um, Ansel Demba, and you did get a sack from John Showell, but you just kinda want more consistency.
Darian GrayHOST
28:06
I don't think Billy Edwards was under pressure nearly enough, and if that means you have to dial up some pressures and some blitzes and, and, and maybe do more stunts, what- whatever it may be, but you gotta find more pass rush if you're Andy Avalos.
Darian GrayHOST
28:19
That's just how I, I view it, and I don't know if the 21 points per game is realistic if you don't get more pass rush.
Darian GrayHOST
28:25
But if you improve it a tad bit, you, you get that pass defense and the secondary shored up, we're having a different conversation.
Jeremy ClarkPANELIST
43:51
Hawkins has to become a little bit better passer.

43:53
But TCU's always seen, as long as we've been watching it for the last two decades, they've always had trouble, whether it was under Gary Patterson or Andy Avalos, facing dual threat quarterbacks, and that just makes me worried that Hawkins is an elusive runner like he is.
Melissa TriebwasserHOST
44:12
West Virginia is going to be annoying, and they're good enough, like I said, to win some games they shouldn't win, and TCU could certainly be one of those games where they hang around long enough to cause some problems.
Melissa TriebwasserHOST
44:24
But they have a long way to go, but they certainly have the pieces to be a gigantic pain for opponents.
George WrighsterHOST
22:43
yes
Aaron FentressHOST
22:44
right so that would have been a playoff team in this current system So what's interesting is that the only two teams to allow under 17 points per game were 2019 Andy Avalos, defense coordinator.
Aaron FentressHOST
22:56
And that team had Kayvon and had Javon Holland.
Aaron FentressHOST
23:00
Four guys in the
SamHOST
55:33
I don't know if that was an upgrade.
SamHOST
55:35
I just don't, and I don't know how good of a DC Andy Avalos is, but he's not the defensive mind that Steve Belichick or his father and play caller of this game Bill Belichick was.
SamHOST
55:44
And you saw this with how the game panned out.
SamHOST
55:46
TCU ran the ball pretty well in the first half.
Spencer McLaughlinHOST
13:55
They've got a great coach who's Come from the defensive side of the ball.
Spencer McLaughlinHOST
13:59
Used to be the DC under former Oregon DC Andy Avalos.
Spencer McLaughlinHOST
14:03
Spencer Danielson is a really good football coach.
Spencer McLaughlinHOST
14:07
And we know what he's going to try and play.
John BuehlerHOST
4:14
You're like, he's like, I'm going up against Sonny Dykes.
John BuehlerHOST
4:17
Some guy that played was an OC at UConn last year in Gordon Sammis and Andy Avalos who couldn't make it work at Boise State.
John BuehlerHOST
4:23
He's like, I'm going to eat my, I'm going to eat dude.
Cody WilliamsHOST
4:26
Yeah.

John BuehlerHOST

Andy Avalos is bringing a lot of pressure.
John BuehlerHOST
10:49
Billy Edwards was falling down a lot, just playing in the rain.
Melissa TriebwasserHOST
32:38
They're going to be really keyed into that side of the ball.
Melissa TriebwasserHOST
32:40
But the Bobby Petrino-Andy Avalos matchup is going to be really fun for real college football sickos because I think Andy is a really great defensive mind.
Melissa TriebwasserHOST
32:50
He's in year three.
Melissa TriebwasserHOST
32:51
He finally has his guys.
Julian CouncilHOST
19:04
Also an edge for them, Zach Chapman.
Julian CouncilHOST
19:06
is also someone they're concerned about so that could be two big losses for TCU who was not great at getting after the passer last year and probably is not going to be that much improved this upcoming season under Andy Avalos their DC a few other things TCU wise battle at starting center and also a battle for a tackle spot so some questions there on the offensive line for them but Sonny Dykes talked about the head coach of TCU they've had different combinations so they feel good about whoever they put there, and the continuity that they're going to have there, and also a kicker competition.
Julian CouncilHOST
19:35
That's a question for Carolina as well.
Julian CouncilHOST
19:36
Is there a kicker? No, I mean, it's important.
Anthony PagnottaHOST
24:50
This is a group that, as we said, returns a decent amount of guys from a year ago.
Anthony PagnottaHOST
24:57
Andy Avalos, the defensive coordinator, is back for them this season.
Anthony PagnottaHOST

Anthony PagnottaHOST
