Are we looking at a kind of a foreshadowing of being clothed, if you will, in the language of the New Testament in Christ's righteousness? Is there something there that we can see, or is that reading too much into this?
22:47
Oh, look, we could talk about this for hours.
22:50
The key word here is the language of holiness.
22:53
And we English speakers need to recognize that when you and I talk about consecration or sanctification, they're all just different English words, sometimes derived via Latin, that have to do with the biblical language of holiness.
23:08
And so we need to think about what we understand by the word holy.
23:12
When I hear the word holy, certainly growing up, I thought that applied particularly to holy behavior.
23:18
So you become a Christian, you become sanctified, and increasingly sanctified behavior looks more and more upright and occasionally uptight.

Andrew, what's going on here with blood in the old Levitical priesthood? It seems like blood seems to be as central as anything in addition to the holy garments, but it seems like blood is absolutely a central factor in the performance of the priesthood duties.

Are there things in there we should think more carefully about in terms of the descendant of the high priest? Yeah.
47:43
It's a great question, and it's an area that I need to do a little bit more work in.
47:49
Two responses that I'd make there, and one of your illustrations is a really helpful illustration.
47:53
First of all, there is a genealogical concern, and so you're quite right in the chapters of Ezra and Nehemiah that some of the priests, the individuals, and also some of the Levites, the assistants, are quite wisely and thoughtfully choose not to operate in the temple role until they can actually validate their lineage.
48:14
So there is that concern to go back to go through the records and so we find in Ezra and Nehemiah a number of genealogies concerned with those sorts of issues for the sake of the temple personnel and there are also some other genealogies concerned with other people and their identity.
48:29
But because of the fall of Jerusalem and the scattering of the people, a number of those records aren't as clear to us later readers as we might like.
48:38
One of the interesting things is this becomes less of a concern once we do reach the New Testament.

Will you take us through, on one hand, the substantial continuity that we see in the Bible between the Aaronic priest and corporate Israel and Jesus in the church.
