Like there's more sort of computer generated.
M
33:14Mark DonaldsonHOST
It's building on the kind of little steps forward they made during trial and kind of making it a bit more... uh commonplace in doctor who so you do have sort of visual effects that are done by computer rather than practically like it feels like doctor who at this point it's obviously it's nowhere near next gen in the look of it but it is it's actually once it's finally kind of starting to kind of push into the era thanks to andrew cartmel and all the kind of new writers that he brings in and the sort of writers obviously we don't get that i don't think Am I right in saying this? We don't really get that in TNG until probably season three when like Ira Steven Burr and Rodney Moore and stuff come in.
M
33:56Mark DonaldsonHOST
Like writers that have grown up with original Star Trek that then have their own take on it.
M
34:01Mark DonaldsonHOST
But Doctor Who, that happens here, really, with sort of, you know, people like Ben Aronovich and Ian Briggs.

Andrew Cartmel suggested making evolution a theme of the piece, while Marc Platt's BBC duties as a radio archivist inspired Lite's mission to document all forms of life on Earth.
T
24:02TriciaHOST
Marc Platt was one of only two writers in the entirety of the history of the series, uh, the other being Andrew Smith, to have a script accepted with, accepted with no professional writing experience whatsoever, and actually no real writing background.

R
43:29Rona MunroGUEST
We were down there, and we, um, uh, kind of were doing workshops every day and, and then we would have various people coming in and talking to us, like producers and, you know, and different folks.
R
43:42Rona MunroGUEST
And one day, um, uh, Andrew Cartmel, who's script editor on Doctor Who, came in with a bunch of other people.
R
43:48Rona MunroGUEST
So it was supposed to be a kind of meet and greet, and everyone's milling around the room and, you know, going up to this person, and I just made a beeline for him and said, "How do I write for Doctor Who? I want to write for Doctor Who." And fortunately, he didn't kind of beat me off of the stick.
R
44:02Rona MunroGUEST
Um, he actually kind of went, "Well, you know, we could talk about it." Um, so that's, uh, so made that connection, and then just pursued it by sending ideas, and, uh, got the commission on the back of that, so.

C
6:02CamHOST
yeah but also like this is the style of the master plan like right here this episode there is those hints and nods that there's something greater for
B
6:11BenHOST
the cart mill master plan yes can you elaborate on the cart mill master plan
C
6:19CamHOST
so the master plan was are you are you saying this for the audience or you're saying it for yourself both So the master plan, Cutman master plan was this idea of, he always thought that the Doctor now at this point, him and the writers were like, all right, the Doctor does not have enough mystery to him.
C
6:36CamHOST
We know who this guy is because we've been dealing with him for 25 years now.

a sense of optimism in the show.
M
75:30Michael MillsGUEST
It's astonishing, isn't it? So Douglas Adams then would only have been about what? five years older than Andrew Cartmell? I feel like Andrew Cartmell was
R
75:42Richie MorganGUEST
like 1957, 1958.
M
75:45Michael MillsGUEST
I know this because that thing that's been doing the rounds on Blue Sky recently of since Andrew Cartmell became script editor, the same generation of fans have been in charge of Doctor Who.
R
75:53Richie MorganGUEST
Oh, gosh.
R
75:54Richie MorganGUEST
