André Derain

I've had half a dozen or so over the past 20 years, and generally in this same gallery, Garagais.

Do you know the place? Derain hung here, Matisse and Dongan.

So I'm in good company.

Only the art lovers have changed, and I'm afraid not for the better.

Uh, there's an incredible Monet of the Tuileries Gardens.

Uh, there's works by Derain, the Fauve painter, Vlaminck, uh, Degas.

I mean, you kind of name the kind of great artists of that period, and it's in this collection, um, which is-

Mm

Fauvism.

Artists like Henri Matisse and Andre Derain begin using color in ways that don't necessarily obey natural appearances.

A face doesn't have to be flesh-colored.

A landscape doesn't have to reproduce what the eye supposedly sees.
