Why the Border Debate Gets Migration All Wrong

I love that question because I think we are only having one tiny piece of that conversation.
A
5:56Amy PopeGUEST
That is a basic expectation of citizens around the world, that their governments can manage their borders.
A
6:02Amy PopeGUEST
But if you manage the border just by increasing surveillance technologies at the border or border patrol, you won't actually get to the real issue, what's driving people to move in the first place.
A

And so it's why I love the work that I'm doing now, because it allows us to open the aperture so much in a so much bigger way and look at what's driving someone to move, How can we address that driver? How can we work with communities so that people are stabilized before they come all the way up to the U.S.-Mexico border? And it became clear when we were looking at the movements across the Americas.

Doug WilksHOST
What's sort of the state in Europe from your point of view in terms of what they need to do to either welcome or manage migrants, however you would describe it?

How do you navigate those dimensions of it as you're working with different governments? I know it's very, very different state by state, but I, I imagine that must be a complicated part of this job that in some ways is just a very, very different set of questions than most of what we've been talking about today.

Amy PopeGUEST
And I know, um, sometimes the language around migration can be quite polarized, and people will throw around terms like xenophobia or racism, but really, actually, there's something more fundamental at stake, and it is important to hear that from states and understand what's at play and figure out if there are ways to address it.

Amy PopeGUEST
Just, uh, you know, an interesting anecdote from some of our work in Japan, there was some effort to attract Japanese diaspora who had lived and worked in South America, who'd grown up in South America.

Amy PopeGUEST
There was a very poor fit when some of that diaspora came to work in Japan because they were perceived as too loud and not respectful of the culture and kept different hours and, you know ...

Amy PopeGUEST
So those are real issues, and if you lose the support of a community, then you lose the debate.

Amy PopeGUEST
So ski mountaineering is really exciting physics-wise because you are seeing athletes do something that is so out of the norm.

Amy PopeGUEST
We're no longer just using gravity to pull the athletes down to the bottom of a hill, but every other sport uses a chair lift to get you up to the top, so gravity can pull you down.

Amy PopeGUEST
But with this, you're overcoming gravity, and you are utilizing that-... friction in a way unlike any other sport to help you get to the top.

Um, sticking to stitches, [chuckles] you know, of in the suits, how would extra material let you go further in a ski jump?

Amy PopeGUEST
Well, it's actually really interesting whenever we look at how this extra material is going to help these athletes.

Amy PopeGUEST
So by adding in a small amount of fabric, we're actually adding in an area, and the larger that area, the larger the lift.
