Americus

The year is 1995.

The man behind the wheel is Devin Williams, 29, a long-haul trucker from Americus, Kansas.

He has a wife, Mary Lou, and three kids.

He has been on the road for four days, hauling strawberries and refrigerated lettuce from Arizona to Kansas City, Missouri, a delivery due by Monday morning.

Lynn leaned toward the window to ask if he needed help.

He picked up a rock and threw it at the car.

Americus, Kansas, is a small town where a man's work schedule is common knowledge.

Devin had lived there with Mary Lou long enough that his routes were part of the household rhythm He drove long haul because it paid well and he was reliable.
