American Impressionism

And I'm Tom Duffy.

We're in the beautiful town of Old Lyme in the eastern part of the state and in the home of the Florence Griswold Museum, the birthplace of American Impressionism.

We'll be talking about the current Patchwork exhibition with the museum's executive director Peter Steer and senior curator Jenny

Parsons.

Yeah, because unlike in the U.S. context, I mean, the U.S. genuinely has a lot of, like, for whatever you think of the different styles, but, you know, from the Harlem Renaissance onwards, even before that, the U.S. has such a rich history of African-American art.

And there's a lot of schools, like, for example, the One Art School in Philadelphia, right? had like Sloan and other ones that were even engaging in a rich tradition of American Impressionism, but they happened to be African-American.

But as I think, someone said this about the, was his first name Arday, James or Jason Arday?

Jason Arday, yeah.

There were American composers who experimented with Impressionism as well.

A great example of American Impressionism is the tone poem Sea Drift, written by John Alden Carpenter in 1933.

The work is inspired by a section of Walt Whitman's major poetic work, Leaves of Grass, called Sea Drift.
