Before it was just open to, like, Congress or whatever? You-- Or was it not open at all? I think they were working on it.
Maria RyanHOST
8:15
You can go onto my website, and under training, we have a link there that says how to find a good trainer.
Maria RyanHOST

And it has information that's been put out by the American Humane Association, 10 very important steps for you to look for.
Maria RyanHOST

So we worked with the government, we worked with indigenous people groups, we wo-worked with conservation groups.
Ben LammGUEST
30:08
We work with, uh, American Humane Society.
Ben LammGUEST
30:10
We worked with all these people, right? To ensure that we do it the right way.
Ben LammGUEST
30:13
They are now, and we wanna monitor them for a while.

So it says, "Yes, five puppies died during the production of Snow Buddies.

American Humane reported that five puppies died while on location.
speaker_4UNKNOWN
13:04
Production involved 58 total puppies."
Dylan SprouseHOST
13:05
Is that the worst thing ever? 58 total puppies?
Dylan SprouseHOST
13:12
Oh, I thought that was five died.
speaker_4UNKNOWN
13:13
"Many being ill, including exposure to parovirus.
speaker_4UNKNOWN
13:15
The film ultimately received an unacceptable rating from the American Humane Society."
Miranda MadayGUEST

Wow.
Brendan WallHOST

like that the dog is like a victim of so much physical abuse.
Brendan WallHOST
29:27
Did the American Humane Association work on this? Oversee any of
Jason McLeodHOST
29:33
this? They did not approve this.
Jason McLeodHOST
29:34
No.
Randy BurrowsHOST
17:35
Anyway, don't know.
Randy BurrowsHOST
17:38
Another little point here, probably just sort of a little side thing, maybe worth mentioning a little bit, is a couple years before this, there was a controversy on the Heaven's Gate set involving animals and the treatment of animals, which led to... legal suits against whichever studio that was so at this time of shooting Cujo a newly empowered American Humane Society had a presence on set so this is just a little side piece I thought was relevant because a couple years earlier like I think I haven't seen Heaven's Gate, but I think I want to say horses died in that and other animals were mistreated.
Randy BurrowsHOST
18:22
So it was a big surprise.
Randy BurrowsHOST
18:24
Yeah, it was a big legal fiasco around that.
Randy BurrowsHOST
18:27
And just sort of some of the results that came out of that was that the American Humane Society had much more of a presence on sets of Hollywood films.
Randy BurrowsHOST
18:35
That's what you mean, though.
Jakub FlaszHOST
18:37
had such an impact on the film industry.
Kim GaebeleinGUEST
3:43
You know, um, this is kind of fun and exciting.
Kim GaebeleinGUEST
3:45
Uh, the American Humane Society actually began Adopt a Shelter Dog Month way back in, uh, 1981, and they did that as a national initiative, and they really wanted to look for a way to be able to inspire families to adopt a dog from a local shelter or a rescue.
Kim GaebeleinGUEST
4:02
So you know, they were really looking for ways to be able to get people engaged and thinking about finding a dog that way.
Kim GaebeleinGUEST
4:09
And so, um, for the last 45 years, the campaign's really highlighted the importance of adoption and helping to connect deserving dogs with, uh, loving forever families, and encouraging that responsible lifelong pet ownership, right? We wanna be able to have pets who go home with people be able to stay home with them and be their forever home.
Ben DaviesHOST
25:01
All right, [laughs] number 14, Apocalypse Now famously endured a chaotic production that included a typhoon destroying the sets, its leading man suffering a heart attack, and filming stretched from a planned 16 weeks to well over a year.
Ben DaviesHOST
25:14
The American Humane Association gave the film a, quote, "unacceptable rating" because it included graphic footage of tribesmen slaughtering which animal? This is, this is, this actually is a great callback to Run Hide Fight.
Ben DaviesHOST
25:27
Was it A, a cow, B, a water buffalo, C, a goat, D, a chicken.
Michael KnowlesHOST
25:35
Oh, man.
Jamie LoftusHOST
68:44
Mm-hmm.
Caitlin DuranteHOST
68:45
So I found from the American Humane Society's website, uh, just pulling a quick quote here, says, quote, "According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-
James StoutGUEST
68:58
Yeah
Caitlin DuranteHOST
68:58
... and the animal trainers, no animal was harmed in the making of this film.
Jamie LoftusHOST
72:32
I don't know.
Caitlin DuranteHOST
72:32
Well, right, 'cause as we talked about on our first Babe movie episode, in movies that have animals on screen, you'll often see in the credits something like, "No animals were harmed during the making of this film.
Caitlin DuranteHOST
72:50
The American Humane Society," like, "monitored the production," kind of thing.
Jamie LoftusHOST
72:54
Mm-hmm.
Ben LammGUEST
29:37
We have a huge animal welfare team.
Ben LammGUEST
29:39
We spend a lot of time with American Humane Society and others.
Ben LammGUEST
29:41
And so we're not gonna go take, do anything super weird.
Ben LammGUEST
29:44
So we're not gonna take a elephant gene and stick it into a, a mouse, 'cause we know it's probably not compatible with life because there's too much genetic divergence.

46 MINS LATER

Ben LammGUEST
75:31
And so I'm very pro-rescue.
Monica PadmanHOST
75:32
Sure.
Ben LammGUEST
75:33
We work with the American Humane Society around it.
Ben LammGUEST
75:35
But at the same time, I could see the other argument, right? So people ask me, "Would you clone your dogs?" And I'm like, "I don't know." If my kid was like...
