Amapá

In the early 1980s, the Brazilian government had a plan, a massive plan, a road they called Perimetral Norte, BR-210.

It was meant to connect Macapá, the capital of Amapá State, to the Colombian border, making accessible the hidden roads of the region and facilitating commerce with Brazilian's northern neighbors, Venezuela, Suriname, and Guyana.

The road was part of Brazil's military government strategy.

Their motto was simple, "Integrar para não entregar", interrogate so as not to hand it over.

The occasion was state-run oil company Petrobras' finding of hydrocarbons in the deepwater Morfo well in Block FZAM-59.

The find was announced last week.

Brazil's president has welcomed the discovery of large oil reserves near the Amazon coast, despite opposition to drilling in the area from environmentalists.

Brazil's state-owned energy company, Petrobras, announced it had detected the reserves off the coast of Amapá State last week.

Lula da Silva described the find as a passport to the future.
